OFAI testing: the four stages, and how long each one lasts

Ontario Fire Administration Inc. runs Candidate Testing Services, the shared testing pipeline most Ontario career departments hire through. You book and pay for it yourself, before any posting opens, and the certificates travel with you.

Why you test before a job is posted

This is the part that catches people out. OFAI certificates are portable across participating municipalities, so you complete the stages on your own schedule and hold the certificates when a posting closes. A posting is often open for two or three weeks, which is nowhere near long enough to book and complete testing from scratch. If you wait for a job to appear, you have already missed it.

The four stages

Stage One: FACT

The Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test, a written assessment. Toronto records the fee at 5.00 plus HST. Some departments accept an expired but previously valid FACT; others do not, so read the posting.

Stage Two: hearing, vision, encapsulated treadmill

Medical screening plus the encapsulated treadmill test, walked under added weight approximating full protective equipment with the face and airway covered. The load, restricted breathing and trapped heat make an ordinary pace feel far harder than it looks.

Stage Three: FPAT

The Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests, a circuit of job-simulation events. Some departments also require the Firefighter Technical Skills Assessment alongside it.

Stage Four: swim

A swim assessment, offered where a partner department requires it. Several Ontario departments now list water survival among their minimum qualifications rather than as an asset.

How long each certificate lasts

The validity windows differ, and the shortest one drives your timing.

The encapsulated treadmill certificate is valid six months.
Hearing and vision run two years.

That gap is the whole planning problem. Book the treadmill last, close to the posting you are aiming at, or you will be re-sitting it while your other certificates are still current. Confirm current fees and validity with OFAI directly, since both can change.
