The hiring process

Oakville hires through the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Services, so complete your OFAI stages before the posting closes. Stage One is the Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test, and Oakville accepts expired valid Stage One certificates. Stage Two covers the hearing assessment, vision assessment, and encapsulated treadmill test, and those certificates must be current and valid on the posting closing date, September 4, 2026.
The current posting lists Stages One and Two as the OFAI certificates needed to apply. The FPAT, technical skills, and behavioural assessments are run later by the department for select candidates, so do not assume you need an OFAI Stage Three certificate to apply. If you are unsure which certificates your application needs, confirm with the department before the deadline.
You also need a swim certificate at application: either the Lifesaving Society's Canadian Swim to Survive Standard or the OFAI swim test certificate. A separate Oakville-administered swim test comes later in the process, so keep swimming between now and then.
Book OFAI appointments through an account on ofai.ca and leave room for delays, because Stage Two certificates must still be valid on the closing date. OFAI sets its own fees and booking rules, so check the OFAI site for current costs.

Applications are accepted online only through the Town of Oakville website, and the current deadline is Friday, September 4, 2026 at noon. Submit your resume and cover letter as a single document and complete the online questionnaire. You should receive an email confirmation, so follow up if it does not arrive.
Do not attach certificates at this stage, but every requirement must already be in place when you apply: current Standard First Aid, a valid and unrestricted Ontario Class DZ licence with fewer than six demerit points, your OFAI certificates, and your swim certificate. The Town states that if you did not have all the requirements at the time of application, you will be eliminated from the recruitment.
Selection is based on the required and preferred qualifications plus your questionnaire answers. The committee looks at work experience, fire-related education, and community volunteer service, so make those easy to find in your resume and answer the questionnaire fully and honestly.
If you applied in a past campaign, you must apply again. Each recruitment stands on its own.

First interviews for the current campaign are scheduled between September 16 and October 9, 2026. This is a formal interview with the Selection Committee, so plan time off work early and confirm the location and format in your invitation.
The committee has already scored your qualifications and questionnaire, so expect questions that dig into the same ground: your work history, fire-related education, and community volunteer service. Prepare short, true stories that show teamwork, reliability, and calm judgment under pressure.
Answer plainly and do not inflate anything. Later stages include reference checks, certificate verification, and a police record check, so your answers will be tested against the record.

A select number of candidates are invited back, with second interviews running October 19 to November 13, 2026. The Selection Committee may add testing or assessments at its discretion, so treat every contact in this window as part of the assessment.
Select candidates are then invited to FPAT, technical skills, and behavioural assessments on November 25 and 26, 2026, with additional screening running through December 4. The Oakville Fire Department administered swim test is scheduled for the afternoon of November 25, 2026 at a Town facility, and you must pass it to be considered for an offer of employment.
Keep your fitness and swimming sharp through the fall instead of tapering after the application. Bring exactly what your invitation asks for and arrive early on testing days.

Conditional offers for the current campaign are expected the week of January 12, 2027. The offer stands or falls on your documents, so have them organized before the call comes.
Be ready to provide references from current and past employers, complete a pre-employment medical, and show documented proof of vaccinations, such as immunization records, test results, or a doctor's letter with dates. Copies of your education and other certificates are collected for verification at this stage.
You also need a police record check with vulnerable sector screening at your own expense, and a driver's abstract dated within 30 days showing a valid and unrestricted Class DZ licence and fewer than six demerit points. Order the abstract close to when it is requested so the 30-day window is not missed.

The current campaign lists a tentative employment start of Wednesday, April 1, 2027. The Oakville Fire Service Recruit Program begins on your first day of employment, so arrive fit and ready to learn rather than expecting a ramp-up period.
Probation runs 12 months under the Oakville Professional Firefighters collective agreement, with performance appraisals at intervals, before confirmation as a fourth class firefighter.
Training covers areas such as emergency medical response, hazardous materials, fire prevention, and public education, and Oakville firefighters work rotating 24-hour shifts including weekends and holidays.
