The hiring process

Brampton accepts applications online only, and only while a firefighter posting is open. The recruitment campaign is currently closed, so sign up for the department's update notifications and watch the City careers site so you are ready the day a posting opens.
When the window opens you will submit a resume, cover letter, and an online questionnaire, and upload copies of your OFAI Stage Two and Stage Three certificates and your NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II certificates. At the time of application you must also be at least 18, legally eligible to work in Canada, hold a Grade 12 OSSD or Ontario approved equivalent, and carry valid First Aid with CPR Level C. Your Ontario DZ licence can wait, but it must be obtained no later than six months from the date of hire.
Complete OFAI testing well before you apply, at your own cost. OFAI charges per attempt: $75 for the Stage One FACT, $50 for the Stage Two hearing assessment, $110 for the encapsulated treadmill, $212 for the Stage Three FPAT, and $270 for the technical skills assessment, plus HST, and your optometrist bills the vision assessment separately. Expired Stage Three certificates are accepted at the time of application.
Plan around expiry dates. Stage One and the Stage Two hearing and vision certificates are valid for two years, the treadmill for six months, and both Stage Three certificates for one year. Download every certificate PDF from your OFAI account as soon as it appears, because OFAI removes certificates from your account once they expire.

Arrive on day one at or above the fitness level you showed for OFAI Stage Three, because recruit school is more physically demanding than any single test. Keep hands-on skills fresh before you start, including knots, SCBA donning, and hose work.

Shifts are 24 hours on a 28-day rotation, averaging 42 hours per week.
