   Kitchener does not run its own entry tests. It requires you to finish all three stages of the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service before you apply. Stage One is the Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT), a written test. Stage Two covers hearing, vision, and the encapsulated treadmill test. Stage Three is the Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job-Related Tests (FPAT) and the Firefighter Technical Skills Assessment. Testing is booked through ofai.ca and takes place at the FESTI campus in Mississauga.

   Start by creating an online account at ofai.ca and completing OFAI's self-assessment. Book early: registration closes five business days before each test date. For most new candidates, the FACT can be booked on its own, the first hearing and treadmill booking must be on the same date, and vision is booked separately. Each stage has its own fee paid to OFAI. In August 2026 the listed fees included $75 plus HST for the FACT and $212 plus HST for the FPAT; confirm current fees on ofai.ca before you book.

   Prepare for each stage on its own terms. The FACT is 110 multiple-choice questions in up to three hours, covering reading, math, map reading, writing, and personal characteristics, and it is marked pass or fail. The FPAT is six timed events in full protective gear weighing about 23 kg, so train for loaded carries, sled pulls, hose advances, and ladder climbs well before you book. Follow OFAI's pre-test rules, including no caffeine or energy drinks for 12 hours before the treadmill test or FPAT, because staff screen your heart rate and blood pressure before you start.

   Watch your certificate dates. OFAI lists the FACT certificate as valid for 24 months and the FPAT certificate for 12 months, so plan your testing so everything is still valid when a Kitchener posting opens. If you fail a stage, OFAI applies a 15-day wait after a first failure and a 30-day wait after later failures before you can retest. Complete your testing ahead of time rather than waiting for a posting, so you can apply as soon as a competition opens.

   Kitchener only accepts applications when a competition is posted. Watch the City's job portal at jobs.kitchener.ca and the Kitchener Fire opportunities page on kitchener.ca. There is no standing waiting list, so check regularly. The most recent competition, a 5th Class Firefighter posting, has already closed and been removed, and the City does not publish a schedule for the next one.

   Before you apply, make sure the minimums are in place and easy to see in your application: graduation from a pre-service Firefighter Education and Training Program or NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II certification, completion of all three OFAI stages, and a valid First Aid and CPR certificate (Level C Standard). List your OFAI certificates with their dates so screeners can confirm they are current.

   The City names specific ways to strengthen an application: the Ontario Fire Marshal Certified Firefighter designation (Components 1, 2, 3), professional or volunteer firefighting experience, related work experience, trade training or certification, and community service involvement. Present these plainly with dates and organizations. Kitchener also looks for strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, so show them with real examples from work or volunteering rather than adjectives.

3. 3Proof of DZ licence and police records check if hired

   These items are conditions of hire, not application requirements. If Kitchener offers you a job, you must supply proof of a valid Class DZ driver's licence and a satisfactory police records check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening, both deemed acceptable by the City of Kitchener.

   Do not leave the DZ licence to the last minute. Earning it involves a medical, a knowledge test, and a road test in a vehicle with air brakes, and training courses can book up weeks ahead. Many Ontario candidates complete the DZ before applying anywhere, since some departments require it at application. Having it ready removes one risk between a conditional offer and a start date.

   Request the police records check through your local police service and ask specifically for the vulnerable sector level, since a basic check is not the same document. Fees and processing times vary by police service, so confirm them locally. Order it when the department asks rather than months in advance, because these checks are usually only accepted while recent; confirm the accepted age of the document with the department. If anything might appear on the check, raise it with the department early and honestly.
