The hiring process

Niagara-on-the-Lake runs an all-volunteer fire service and no firefighter certification is required to apply. You apply through the Town's employment opportunities page at notl.com/apply-job, which means registering an account on the Town's site first.
Attach a cover letter and resume. The Town invites you to include any certifications you feel add value, such as NFPA training, first aid, CPR, or trade and technical skills like vehicle mechanics, building construction, heavy equipment operation, or electrical systems. None of these are required.
Volunteers respond by pager from home or work to one of five stations (Old Town, St. Davids, Virgil, Queenston, and Glendale), so use your cover letter to explain when you are available and how close you live or work to a station. Niagara-on-the-Lake links its physical testing to the OFAI occupational assessment stream at fireontario.com. The CPAT is a pass or fail circuit of eight events completed in a 50 lb weighted vest, with a maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.
The events are a stair climb (with an extra 25 lb of shoulder weights), hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search crawl, rescue drag, and ceiling breach and pull. You move continuously along the course and may not run between events.
OFAI offers a virtual orientation and a hands-on practical orientation for $120, and strongly recommends orientation before test day. Book testing through the fireontario.com registration page, and check current test fees there since neither the department nor the OFAI page cited here publishes the test fee itself.
Wear long pants, closed-toe footwear, work gloves, and a hard hat with a chin strap, and leave watches and restrictive jewellery at home. Train stair climbing under load and grip endurance for several weeks before you book.

The Town's employment page states that a current driver's abstract is required for Town positions that involve driving Town vehicles, and a police background check for positions with access to sensitive information.
