For the career firefighter competition, Ottawa states: "Please note: application processes will be posted as needed to fulfill staffing level requirements", and offers a career alert to "be notified when the process opens". There is no career competition open today. Ottawa Fire Services does however have a separate Rural Firefighter posting live on the city job board, casual and paid hourly, with "Application Close: 14/08/2026", requiring you to "live in close proximity to a rural fire station". That is a different stream from the career competition this guide covers, but it is a real way in.

Ottawa Fire Services publishes no language requirement we could find, and their minimum-qualifications page would not load for us on the last check. The City of Ottawa runs a bilingual municipal service and Ontario's French Language Services Act designates Ottawa, so bilingual-designated positions exist at the city; whether a given firefighter competition is one of them is worth asking before you apply.

The hiring process

Ottawa posts career firefighter competitions only when it needs to fill staffing levels, so sign up for the city's career alert and have every document ready before a posting opens. Everything on the minimum qualifications list must be in place by the closing date, not after.
By closing you need NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 plus NFPA 1072 or 472 Operations level, each carrying an IFSAC or Pro Board seal, or a Letter of Compliance from the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office. You also need an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent, an Ontario Class D licence with a Z air brake endorsement and no more than three demerit points, a current Standard First Aid certificate, and CPR level C dated no more than 12 months before the closing date.
Ottawa asks for all supporting documents combined into a single PDF named LastName_FirstName_Position_PostingNumber_Required_Documents.pdf. Follow that naming format exactly and check that every page is legible before you upload.
Incomplete or invalid documentation disqualifies the application, and there is no grace period after closing. Strong candidates build the PDF weeks early and re-check each certificate date against the posting's closing date.

If you hold a current and valid OFAI Stage One Candidate Testing Services certificate, you are exempt from this step, so submit that certificate with your application. All other qualifying applicants complete an aptitude test arranged by Ottawa Fire Services.
The cost of the Ottawa-arranged test is borne by the candidate when registering. Ottawa does not publish the fee on its recruitment pages, so confirm the amount with the department when you register.
Failing the test eliminates you from the competition, so treat it with the same weight as the interview. Book the earliest sitting you can prepare properly for rather than the earliest sitting available.
Firefighter aptitude tests typically cover reading comprehension, math, mechanical reasoning, and human relations, so timed practice in those areas is the safest general preparation. Confirm the test format with the department, since Ottawa does not publish it.

At this stage Ottawa reviews applications to decide who advances to an interview. There is nothing new to submit; screening works entirely from what you already provided.
That makes the application stage your real screening preparation. Certificates with the right seals, a licence within the three demerit point limit, and correctly dated first aid and CPR documents are what move files forward.
Ottawa notes that some steps in the process may occur concurrently, so an invitation to testing or an interview can arrive on short notice. Watch your email closely and keep your schedule flexible while screening runs.

Selected applicants sit a panel interview, and Ottawa provides additional information to candidates who are invited. Read everything the department sends closely, because it is the clearest signal of what the panel expects from you.
Fire service panel interviews commonly mix behavioural questions with scenario judgment, so prepare specific true stories about teamwork, conflict, integrity, and working under pressure. Practise answering out loud in a structured way, such as situation, action, result.
Be ready to explain why you want to serve in Ottawa rather than why you want to be a firefighter in general. Learn what you can about Ottawa Fire Services from the city's own pages, bring anything the invitation asks for, and arrive early.

Ottawa maintains a CPAT requirements page and a CPAT preparation guide on ottawa.ca. Read both as soon as you enter the process instead of waiting for an invitation, because physical preparation takes months, not days.
The CPAT is a timed, standardized circuit of firefighting task simulations performed in a weighted vest, so train stair climbing under load, grip strength, and loaded carries well before test day. Practise the full circuit format if you can get access to an orientation or practice session.
If you have already passed a CPAT elsewhere, ask Ottawa whether an existing result is accepted and how recent it must be, since the process page does not say.

This stage bundles several checks: a Criminal Record Check at Level 3, the Vulnerable Sector Check, obtained through your local police service; a background investigation by the City and a third-party agency; skills assessments; and a medical assessment.
The skills assessments confirm proficiency against NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 and NFPA 1072 or 472, plus fire apparatus driving competency. Keep practising core fireground skills and air brake vehicle handling after the interview instead of treating your certification as finished business.
The medical assessment is conducted by a City physician using NFPA 1582, the comprehensive occupational medical program standard. If you manage a medical condition, bring current documentation from your own physician so the assessment works from complete information.
Vulnerable sector checks can take weeks depending on your police service, so start yours as soon as Ottawa asks. If a pardon applies to you, Ottawa requires that it be obtained within agreed timelines, so raise it with the department early.

A selection committee reviews completed candidate files before offers go out. There is nothing to submit unless asked, but the City reserves the right to request additional documents and to confirm an applicant's eligibility at any time.
Answer any request from the department the same day you are able. Slow responses are one of the few ways a candidate can hurt a file at this stage.
Keep every certificate valid through this stage, including first aid, CPR, and your licence standing. Eligibility can be rechecked right up to the offer.

Successful candidates receive a written offer of employment from the City. Read it in full before accepting, and note any conditions, dates, and documents it asks for.
Ottawa does not publish its recruit training schedule on the pages we reviewed, so ask your contact what training looks like and plan work and family logistics around it. Keep your fitness at test-ready levels between the offer and your start date.
