OFAI FPAT 12-Week Program

Where the FPAT sits in the OFAI pipeline
Most Ontario career departments hire through OFAI Candidate Testing Services. Stage One is the FACT written assessment, Stage Two covers hearing, vision, and an encapsulated treadmill test, and Stage Three includes the FPAT, six sequential job-related physical tests. Certificates are portable across participating municipalities, and each stage has its own validity window, so plan your training so both physical certificates are current when a posting closes.
Stage Two: the encapsulated treadmill
The Stage Two treadmill assessment is performed in provided firefighting protective equipment weighing approximately 23 kg (51 lb), with a VO2 mask worn during the test. The combination of external load, a mask over the face, and trapped heat makes an ordinary treadmill pace feel much harder. This program treats loaded incline walking as its anchor session every single week so that the sensation of working under load becomes familiar rather than alarming. Exact speeds, grades, and loads are set by OFAI; the official candidate guide governs.
Stage Three: the six FPAT tests
The FPAT is six job-related tests completed in sequence while wearing provided personal protective equipment that weighs approximately 23 kg (51 lb), with the SCBA carried but not on air. OFAI lists them in this order: Equipment Carry / Vehicle Extrication, Charged Hose Advance, Weighted Sled Pull, Forcible Entry Simulation, Victim Rescue, and Ladder Climb. A mandatory familiarization session comes first, each test is timed on its own against its own time standard, and all six must be passed. Weights and time standards can change, so treat the current OFAI candidate guide as the only authoritative source and use this program to build the underlying capacities.
Charged hose advance and weighted sled pull
The charged hose advance moves a nozzle and three lengths of charged 44 mm hose 30 m at a fast walk, because running is not permitted, so it loads the legs, hips, and grip while you lean into the resistance and drive with short powerful steps. The weighted sled pull hauls a sled with a static rope over 15.24 m, repeating the pull sequence three times without moving your feet during each pull, so the arms, back, and a braced trunk do the work. Training that maps to both includes sled drags, hand-over-hand rope or strap pulls, and backwards drags. Technique matters: on the hose advance, keep the line over the shoulder or at the hip and walk with a continuous drive; on the sled pull, keep your feet planted and pull smoothly instead of in jerky yanks.
Equipment carry, vehicle extrication, and ladder climb
The first test carries a 20 kg tool and then a 36 kg tool to points 15 m away, holds the smaller tool on three contact discs for 30 seconds each as a vehicle extrication simulation, then returns both tools to the start, which tests grip endurance and postural strength under a heavy load. The last test is the ladder climb: up and down 10 rungs of a 7.2 m ladder five times, keeping three points of contact and taking every rung. Farmer carries, loaded holds, step-ups, and hanging grip work build these qualities. In carries, quick controlled steps with a tall chest beat long lunging strides. The ladder raise is not an FPAT test; OFAI assesses it in the separate Stage Three Technical Skills Assessment.
Victim rescue drag and forcible entry
The rescue drag is a short, intense drag of a mannequin weighing approximately 83 kg through a serpentine course, around a cone at 15 m, and back to the start without touching the cones, which rewards leg drive, hip strength, and a secure grip around the load. The forcible entry simulation is repeated powerful strikes with a 4.5 kg sledgehammer on a mechanically braked target until the buzzer sounds. Deadlifts, backwards sled drags, and sledgehammer or slam work build the right patterns without needing test equipment.
Climbing under load in training
The FPAT has no stair or tower climb, but climbing while loaded is still the single most transferable training activity in this program: incline treadmill walking under load prepares you for the Stage Two treadmill, and weighted step-ups and stairwell repeats build the leg endurance the ladder climb and victim rescue draw on. Practise a metronome-steady cadence you can hold for minutes, not a sprint pace you abandon after one flight.
Heat and encapsulation acclimation
Working while encapsulated traps heat, and unprepared candidates often fade from thermal strain rather than muscular fatigue. This program treats acclimation as a distinct training target, introduced gradually in the Peak phase: an extra long-sleeve layer during moderate-intensity sessions, only in cool or moderate conditions, never in hot weather, never in sauna-style setups. Hydrate before and after, train with another person nearby when layered, and stop immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated, confused, or if you stop sweating. Acclimation is about gentle repeated exposure, not suffering.
Pacing wins the FPAT
Each test is timed on its own and followed by exactly three minutes of rest, with your PPE still on and no leaving the testing area. Going out too hard on an early test spikes heart rate and breathing, and three minutes in full gear is little time to recover before the next one. Learn a hard but controlled effort in training, practise settling your breathing quickly between efforts, and keep it rhythmic. If one test is failed the assessment ends immediately, so the goal is clearing every test inside its own time standard, not posting the fastest time on any one.
OFAI Stage Four swim test
OFAI runs a Stage Four swim test. Some departments require a valid swim certificate, others list it or an equivalent lifesaving award as an asset, and some do not ask for it. If your target departments value it, add two easy technique-focused swim sessions per week alongside this program, prioritizing relaxed breathing and efficient stroke mechanics over speed. Confirm current requirements in the official OFAI candidate guide and in each department's posting.
Les 12 semaines
Tests de référence
Testez-vous toutes les quatre semaines pour que la semaine de pointe ne réserve aucune surprise.
- Semaine 4 : Loaded treadmill walk test. Walk 20 minutes on a treadmill at 8 percent incline wearing a 20 to 25 lb vest at the fastest pace you can hold without touching the rails. Record the speed, your effort out of 10, and how quickly your breathing settles in the two minutes after stopping. No treadmill: use a continuous stairwell climb or a steady outdoor hill route with the same load and duration.
- Semaine 8 : FPAT circuit dry run. Wearing a 20 to 25 lb vest, complete a continuous circuit: 30 m drag, 60 m loaded carry, 20 step-up or stair-flight climbs, 15 m low crawl, and 20 strike or slam repetitions, then repeat once with minimal rest. Record total time and note which event slowed you most; that event gets extra attention in the Peak phase.
- Semaine 12 : Taper simulation. Three to four days before test day, complete one crisp rehearsal at roughly 60 percent of the week 8 volume: a single circuit round at your intended test pace with a light vest, feeling fast and controlled. The goal is confidence and sharpness, not fatigue. Rest, hydrate, and sleep well in the remaining days.
