Can You Reuse a Firefighter Test Score at Another Department?
Which written and physical test results transfer between Canadian departments, which do not, and how to plan your testing so one sitting counts for more than one application.
Testing is the part of firefighter hiring candidates pay for out of pocket, and the fees are only half the cost. The rest is calendar: sittings run on set dates, results take time to reach a department, and every result has a shelf life. So the question of what transfers is worth answering before you book anything, not after.
The short version: written scores sometimes travel inside a testing network, physical results usually travel where the department accepts that administrator, and almost nothing travels between networks.
What transfers, and what does not
Inside the National Testing Network. A score sits in your NTN account, and participating departments can pull it if it is current enough for them. This is the closest thing to portability in Canadian firefighter hiring.
Between NTN's own tests, no. NTN administers more than one battery. Calgary is the useful worked example: its Step 2 candidate materials name the Fire Express Exam plus the Public Safety Self-Assessments, and state that scores from a previous NTN test do not transfer to Fire Express. Same administrator, same account, different test, no transfer.
OFAI, inside Ontario's pipeline. Ontario's career departments hire largely through Ontario Fire Administration Inc., with the FACT written assessment at Stage One and the physical stages after it. Those results live inside that process. A candidate applying outside the province should plan to test again.
Physical results, where the administrator is accepted. A CPAT card from a licensed testing centre is widely accepted, and the CPAT program and test guide covers what the sitting involves. Whether it is accepted for a given posting is still the department's call, and the validity window is the usual limit.
The two clocks that decide it
Every result has two expiry dates, and candidates who only track one lose the year.
The administrator's window. How long the testing body considers the result current.
The department's window. How long that department will accept it for. This is often shorter, and it is the one in the posting. Saskatoon and Regina both want the York physical assessment current within six months of the start date, which is short enough to make early testing a genuine mistake.
Where they disagree, the department wins. A result the administrator still holds is worth nothing to a department whose posting asks for something more recent.
How to plan one sitting to cover several applications
- List your target departments and write down, for each, which administrator and which test they name.
- Look for the overlap. If four of your five targets accept the same administrator, that is the sitting to book.
- Find the tightest window among them, then place your test date so the result is still current when the latest of their likely postings closes.
- Confirm by email. One question to each recruiter: will you accept a result from this administrator, dated this month. Recruiters answer this readily, and the answer is worth more than any forum thread.
- Book early in the window rather than late. Sittings fill, and a retest needs somewhere to go.
The candidates who get this right are usually the ones who wrote down the postings from last year. A department that posts roughly annually tells you, by its own history, when your result needs to be alive.
What if your targets use different tests?
Then you are testing more than once, and the useful move is to make the preparation transfer even though the score does not.
The written batteries differ in packaging more than in substance. Mechanical reasoning, arithmetic under time pressure, reading dense procedural text, spatial and map work, and judgment about people appear across all of them, weighted differently. Preparing the underlying skills rather than one vendor's format is what makes a second sitting cheap in effort even when it is not cheap in fees. Our full-length FireTEAM-style mock is built on the published structure of that sitting, and the underlying banks feed every battery that tests the same skills.
Physical preparation transfers even better, because the capacities are the same and only the order and the load change.
What a retest actually costs you
Not just the fee. Every administrator sets its own waiting period before you may sit again, and every one of those periods is measured in weeks rather than days. A candidate who fails a physical test three weeks before a posting closes does not usually get a second attempt inside that window.
There is a second cost that is easy to miss. Some processes cap attempts inside a single competition, so a second failure does not mean waiting for the next date, it means waiting for the next recruitment. That turns a fee into a year.
This is the argument for arriving able to pass comfortably rather than exactly, and for booking early in a window instead of at the end of it. A booking with room behind it survives a bad day. A booking with nothing behind it does not.
Keep the paperwork where you can find it
Every stage of this produces a document with a date on it: a score report, a physical test card, a licence class, a certification. Departments ask for them at different stages, and one department will ask for a copy of something another one never mentioned.
Candidates lose weeks to this, not because they never had the document but because they cannot find the version with the right date. Keeping scans in one place, with the expiry recorded next to each, turns a scramble into an attachment. Our certification and document tracker does that, and it warns you before anything lapses.
Before you book anything
Three questions, in this order:
- Which administrator do most of my targets accept?
- What is the shortest currency window among them?
- When did each of them last post?
Those three answers place your test date. Everything else, the fee, the travel, the training block, arranges itself around it, and the candidate who books blind usually discovers the constraint after paying for the sitting.
Transfer rules, currency windows and which administrator a department uses all change between recruitments. Everything here was checked against the administrators' and departments' own published material as of September 2026. Confirm with the posting you are answering, and with the recruiter where the posting is silent.
Foire aux questions
- Does a FireTEAM score transfer between departments?
- Often, within the National Testing Network. A score sits in your NTN account and participating departments can pull it, subject to their own currency window. The catch is that NTN administers more than one test, and a score on one of its batteries does not stand in for another.
- Can I use an OFAI result at a department outside Ontario?
- Generally no. Ontario Fire Administration Inc. runs a staged process for its member departments, and results are used inside that pipeline. Departments elsewhere run their own testing or use a different administrator, so plan to test again rather than assume portability.
- How long is a written test score good for?
- It depends on the administrator and on the department reading it, and both matter. A score can be valid at the administrator for longer than a department is willing to accept, so the currency window in the posting is the one that governs your application.
- Does a CPAT card work at more than one department?
- Frequently, yes, where the department accepts a CPAT issued by a licensed testing centre. The limits are the validity window, commonly a year, and whether the department requires the card dated inside its own posting window.
- Should I test before a posting opens?
- Only with the expiry in mind. Testing too early is a real mistake when a result is only good for six months, and testing after a posting closes is worse. Work backwards from when your target department usually posts.
- What is the cheapest way to test for several departments?
- Pick the administrator the largest number of your targets accept, test once inside a window that covers their likely postings, and confirm with each recruiter that they will accept that result. It is a short email and it can save a fee, a trip and a month.
