The hiring process

Nanaimo accepts applications only when a vacancy is posted on the City's Job Postings page, and career hiring happens annually depending on retirements and operational requirements. Every minimum qualification must be done at application: NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 and 2 certification (the November 2025 process document also accepts NFPA 1010), an Emergency Medical Responder licence from EMALB, a Class 3 BC licence with air brake endorsement or an out-of-province equivalent, and a CPAT or University of Victoria Fire-Fit certificate completed within the past 12 months. You also need a high school diploma, the legal right to work in Canada, and a driver's abstract showing safe driving with less than 6 points in the past 3 years.
Note that the November 2025 version of the Career Recruitment Process raised the minimum EMALB licence from First Responder to Emergency Medical Responder, so plan your medical licensing to the EMR level. The department updates this document before each hiring process, so read the current version on the recruitment page before you apply.

The station list is not published. As general preparation, refresh the hands-on basics from your certification: SCBA donning and use, hose deployment, ladder raises, knots, and tool handling, performed smoothly and safely rather than just fast.
Your EMALB licence is a minimum qualification, so keep patient assessment and care skills current as well. Confirm with the department whether medical skills are assessed at this stage.
