How to become a firefighter in Nanaimo

Nanaimo hires pre-certified: NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 and 2 certification and an EMALB First Responder licence are minimum qualifications, along with a Class 3 BC licence with air brake and a CPAT or University of Victoria Fire-Fit certificate from the past 12 months at application. New hires start as Flex Firefighters, which carries a requirement to live within one hour's travel of the city's fire stations. The competition can take up to 6 months and includes psychometric testing, a practical skills assessment, fitness testing, an interview, and an NFPA 1582 medical.
NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II plus HazMat Operations are required before applying. Budget for fire school before you can compete.
