Calgary's application intake is currently closed, so your first job is to watch the recruitment page for the next window and use the wait to prepare. CFD receives close to 3,000 applications per intake, and roughly 1 in 10 applicants completes the full process.
At application you must be 18 or older, eligible to work in Canada, have no criminal activity in the past 3 years, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and hold a full non-GDL Alberta Class 5 licence with fewer than 6 demerit points. International schooling needs a Foreign Credential Recognition evaluation, so start that early because it takes time.
Fill in every field carefully and follow the instructions exactly. CFD warns that small errors or missed instructions can stall or end a candidacy, so attention to detail is effectively scored from your first form.
Use the same name and email everywhere, because your NTN test account at the next step must match your application. Email is the recruitment team's primary channel, so check your junk folder regularly and confirm an address is not do-not-reply before responding.

Calgary tests through the National Testing Network, and per CFD's Step 2 candidate materials this stage has three components: the NTN Fire Express Exam plus PSSA Parts 1 and 2, all run through an NTN account CFD invites you to create. Register with the same name and email you applied with.
The components are online, not proctored, and need no scheduling, but plan about two hours for the Fire Express Exam and 45 minutes for each PSSA part, done in one sitting, and note the PSSA parts require a computer. The recruitment page lists the NTN fee at $55 US; it is charged in US dollars, so confirm the current amount with NTN. Missing the deadline on any component removes you from the process.
Nobody publishes a section list for the Fire Express Exam, but NTN documents that its firefighter testing measures human relations, mechanical aptitude, reading, and math, so those four are the defensible things to prepare. The PSSA is a self-assessment, not an aptitude test: answer honestly and consistently, because CFD assesses integrity again at the PHS and the polygraph.
Do not complete the NTN PHQ or job history, because CFD collects that separately. If anything goes wrong technically, NTN support is the first call, not CFD, and there are no accommodations because extra time is built into the allotment.

This step is uploading the documents that support what you claimed at application, such as proof of education and your licence. Have clear, legible scans ready before the request arrives so a deadline never catches you short.
If your schooling was outside Canada, the Foreign Credential Recognition evaluation is the document CFD needs, and those take weeks to obtain. Order transcripts or replacement certificates now if anything is missing.
Follow any file naming and format instructions exactly. CFD warns that small errors or missed instructions can stall or end a candidacy, and a rejected upload can cost you the intake.

Reaching this step assigns you a Recruitment Officer who manages your file for the rest of the process. From here, direct every question to that officer rather than to general recruitment.
Two things are required. Watch the Hiring Process Preparation Presentation in full before you start writing, then complete the FD 1242 Personal History Statement and upload it to your online applicant profile. The deadline is firm, the 2026 intake allowed roughly two weeks, and missing it can remove you from the process.
Be honest and thorough, because the PHS is reviewed by your Recruitment Officer, confirmed at the polygraph, and read again in full at the Selection Committee. If you remember something after submitting, never edit or delete what is on file; add it to the FD 1479 update form, re-upload the whole form, and email your Recruitment Officer each time so it is logged.
If any disclosure involves alcohol and driving, CFD asks you to run the figures through a blood alcohol concentration calculator and include the result. Volunteering the calculation reads as candour; leaving it out reads as an omission, and the polygraph revisits the same ground.

This is an in-person behavioural descriptive interview in Calgary, and answers must follow the STAR format: Situation, Task, Actions, Result. Fewer than 40 percent of candidates succeeded at the panel in 2025 per CFD's own materials, so treat this as the stage where Calgary campaigns are won or lost.
Build a bank of real stories from work, volunteering, and team settings that cover teamwork, conflict, integrity, safety, and service to others. Practise telling them out loud in STAR order until the structure is automatic, and always finish with the result.
CFD runs free candidate events, including an in-person interview workshop with Prospect Human Services where Recruitment Officers conduct mock interviews. Attend one if you can, and note the City's candidate resource list points to further free interview preparation.

The polygraph is conducted in Calgary and costs $500 plus GST, paid by the candidate. Its purpose is to verify your Personal History Statement and everything else you have said through the process.
The real preparation happens weeks earlier with a complete, honest PHS. If anything has come back to you since submitting, put it on the FD 1479 update form before the exam rather than hoping it will not come up.

Calgary uses the CPAT, an eight-station test simulating fire scene tasks, run at CFD facilities for $200 plus GST. Failure to complete the test results in removal from the application process.
You get two orientations and two timed trials before your scheduled test. Use all four; they exist so you can learn the equipment and find a pace you can hold, and a common failure mode is starting too fast.

CFD requires a minimum of three professional references, and one must be your current employer. Personal references from family or friends are not accepted.
Because your current employer must be listed, they will learn you are applying. Plan that conversation early rather than letting the reference call force the timing.
Choose supervisors who can speak to your reliability, conduct, and how you take direction, and brief them so they know a call is coming. A reference who does not respond slows your file, so confirm availability before you list anyone.

The offer is conditional. After signing you must provide a new 5-year driver's abstract with no more than 6 demerits, a new criminal record check with vulnerable sector search, and proof your certifications are current.
You will also complete a medical and fitness assessment, including a treadmill evaluation with a VO2 minimum of 12 minutes 30 seconds. The medical standard is NFPA 1580, and CFD publishes the treadmill protocol and a list of disqualifying medical conditions from the recruitment page, so review both before your assessment.
Expect uniform fittings and a full-day recruit orientation where you bring original documents. Recruit academy runs 13 weeks, and CFD advises arriving with cardiovascular endurance, strength, mobility, and stamina already built, so keep training between the offer and your start date.
