Required before hire

The hiring process

Abbotsford only accepts applications while a firefighter competition is open. The city's careers page states that applications are accepted when an active career or auxiliary firefighter recruitment is in progress, so watch the Abbotsford career opportunities board and apply through the online portal as soon as a posting appears.

The written exam is administered by BL Associates Corporate Psychologists Inc. The department's page notes that online options are available and that previous BL Associates results are valid for 12 months, so if you have tested with them recently for another department, ask whether that result can carry over.
Abbotsford does not publish the exam content, so prepare for the standard firefighter aptitude areas: reading comprehension, basic math, mechanical reasoning, and following written directions. Practise under a timer, because pacing is what separates a pass from a near miss on tests like this.

Abbotsford runs its own CPAT at AFRS Fire Station #3, 28465 Fraser Highway, and you book it online through the department's booking site at www.afrsbc.ca. The test costs $350.00 plus applicable taxes, spots are first come first served, and sessions may be cancelled if fewer than eight participants are booked by the deadline three days before the test date, in which case you can reschedule or request a refund.
Before you can test, you must submit a Par-Q form and a medical form completed by a medical doctor, uploaded together as a single document. Both are valid for one year from completion, and the cost of the medical clearance is yours.
The department expects candidates to attend two walk-through orientation sessions within the eight weeks before their scheduled CPAT, at $75.00 plus taxes per session, unless a waiver is completed. Take the orientations seriously: practising the eight events with the equipment is the single best predictor of passing.
The CPAT itself is eight events performed continuously in a 50 pound vest, with an extra 25 pounds for the stair climb, and you must finish in 10 minutes and 20 seconds or less. Wear long pants and closed footwear, arrive rested since your pre-exercise heart rate cannot exceed 110 beats per minute, and remember the pass certificate is valid for one year from the date of completion.

The department describes day 1 as a run, a swim, and skill stations, but it does not publish distances, times, or a station list. Confirm the exact details in your invitation email and ask careers@abbotsford.ca if anything is unclear.
The swim is the event that catches otherwise fit candidates off guard. If you are not a confident swimmer, get pool time in well before this stage, because raw gym fitness does not transfer to the water.
Build a running base alongside your strength work so you can perform back to back events without fading. At skill stations, listen to the full instructions before touching anything, work at a steady controlled pace, and treat safety as part of the score.

Day 2 combines an interview, presentations, and more skill stations. The department does not publish the interview format or presentation topics, so prepare broadly and confirm any instructions in your invitation email.
For the interview, prepare short true stories that show teamwork, judgment under pressure, integrity, and service to the public, and be ready to explain why Abbotsford specifically. Panels reward candidates who answer the question asked, in plain language, without padding.
If you are asked to present, practise delivering it out loud to a listener and hold to any time limit. A clear, organized five minutes beats a rushed ten every time.
Strong candidates treat the whole two days as one continuous interview. How you speak to staff, other candidates, and volunteers between events is noticed.

Abbotsford's requirements state you must have no criminal convictions or pending charges and must be able to obtain Vulnerable Sector clearance, so a record or an open charge at this stage is disqualifying.
Choose references who have actually supervised your work, ideally in fire, emergency services, or physically demanding jobs, and warn them a call is coming. A reference who answers promptly and speaks in specifics helps you more than a bigger title who barely remembers you.
Complete the police check promptly through the process the department directs and be fully honest on every form. Confirm with the department which agency they want the check from and whether any fee applies, since the posted material does not state one.

Abbotsford lists pre-employment medicals as its own stage after the checks, but it does not publish what the examination covers or who pays. Confirm the appointment details, any forms, and any cost with the department when you are invited.
Bring a current list of medications, corrective lenses if you use them, and knowledge of your own medical history, including past injuries and surgeries. Answer every question honestly, since a condition that is disclosed and managed is handled very differently from one that is discovered.
This is a poor week to start a crash diet, a new supplement, or a heavy training block. Arrive rested and hydrated so the results reflect your normal state.

This is the final assessment stage, and the department publishes no format details, so treat it as a serious formal interview rather than a handshake. Confirm the time, location, and expected dress in your invitation.
By this point your skills are proven, so the Chief is judging fit: your character, your reasons for choosing Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, and how you will represent the department in the community. Know the department and the city, and be ready to talk about your long-term intentions honestly.
Keep your answers short, direct, and free of rehearsed speeches. Ask one or two genuine questions at the end, and thank the Chief for their time without overdoing it.
