To become a firefighter with Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE), you apply during HRFE's application window, then pass an online aptitude test, a physical test with an aerobic fitness cut-off, a competency-based panel interview, and background and medical checks. The only documents you attach to the application are proof of Grade 12 and your driver's licence. No fire certification is asked for: new firefighters are hired as Firefighter 4th Class and trained by HRFE. This guide explains each stage, from HRFE's Work for Halifax Fire page as it read on September 23, 2026, which describes the 2026 competition.

What are the requirements to apply to Halifax Fire?

For the 2026 competition, you had to be 18 before January 6, 2026, legally entitled to work in Canada, and able to communicate effectively in English, with language assessed as you move through the process. You needed Grade 12 or an equivalent, and a copy had to be attached to the application. A high school transcript is accepted only if it clearly states a graduation date or is certified by stamp or signature.

Check the licence rule carefully. New HRFE firefighters must earn a Class 3 licence with an air brake endorsement during recruit training, and a candidate still holding a Class 5 "N" licence at hire is not eligible for that upgrade. So if there is an N on your licence, HRFE requires you to complete a full Class 5 before the posting date.

Background screening is a requirement too, but you do not submit it up front. HRFE checks a criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check, a child abuse registry check and a driver's abstract later in the process, and adds an integrity interview.

What goes in the application, and when is the window?

The 2026 window ran from January 6 to 11:59 p.m. Atlantic time on January 20, 2026, and late submissions were not accepted. HRFE's page has read "Application Period now closed" since February 9, 2026, and it has not published the next window.

You attach exactly four things: a resume, a cover letter, a copy of your driver's licence (front and back), and proof of Grade 12. HRFE says not to include other certifications or documents, because they can cause errors in your submission. You can apply to the competition once, your resume and cover letter cannot be changed after you submit, and withdrawing to resubmit is treated as a duplicate.

Two rules apply from the first email. HRFE says candidates must answer its messages within 24 hours or be removed from the process, and that attention to detail, punctuality and honesty are evaluated continuously. Check your inbox daily while a competition is running.

What are the steps in the Halifax hiring process?

HRFE runs seven phases, and the 2026 dates show how long the process takes:

  1. Application, January 6 to 20, 2026.
  2. Aptitude testing, the FPSI Online Firefighter Test, February 4 and 7, 2026.
  3. Physical abilities testing, the Gledhill Fitness Protocol in Halifax, September 28 to October 8, 2026.
  4. Panel interview, competency-based, October 20 to November 5, 2026.
  5. Security clearance: criminal records check, child abuse registry check, driver's abstract and reference checks.
  6. Integrity interview.
  7. Medical assessment against NFPA 1582.

Between the interview and the security clearance sits the Consideration for Hire Pool, and phases 5 to 7 only happen when HRFE needs to process a hiring group. HRFE marks every date as subject to change.

What is the Halifax aptitude test?

It is the FPSI Online Firefighter Test, taken online from a personal computer. The test does not work on a tablet or phone, so if you do not have a computer, HRFE suggests borrowing one or using a public library or employment centre. Invitations and access instructions are emailed after the posting closes.

HRFE publishes an orientation guide for the online test and a separate proctoring guide. Read both, and set up and check your computer, before test day.

How hard is the Halifax physical test?

It starts with a cut-off. The Gledhill Fitness Protocol begins with a VO2 max test on a treadmill: HRFE measures your aerobic capacity directly, by expired air analysis, while the speed and incline rise until you reach your maximum. Candidates must reach 42.5 ml/kg/min to continue, and anyone who does not is removed from the competition.

Candidates who reach it then do the job-related events: a ladder climb, a claustrophobia test, a hose carry and climb, a rope pull, a hose advance and drag, a ladder lift, a victim drag and forced entry. Some are pass or fail and some are timed, and HRFE says all candidates must complete each one successfully. The day takes about three hours and must be attended in person.

Because the aerobic test comes first, train aerobic capacity before anything else: strength helps at the stations, but you only reach them after meeting the cut-off. HRFE suggests moderate to high intensity aerobic training, 30 to 45 minutes a session, four to five times a week. VO2 max improves over weeks of training rather than days, so start early. Our Gledhill Protocol program is a 12-week plan for this test that builds aerobic capacity first and adds the station work after.

HRFE also publishes test-day rules: a light meal up to two hours before, no smoking or caffeine that day, and no heavy exercise, alcohol, vaping or cannabis for 24 hours beforehand.

What is the Halifax panel interview like?

It is a competency-based panel interview for the candidates who pass the Gledhill and are selected. You draw on examples from your past work, volunteer or personal experience to show you have the competencies of a career firefighter. HRFE says the competencies measured may include Communication, Customer Service, Stress Management, Teamwork and Cooperation, Values and Ethics, and Valuing Diversity, and it links the municipality's Employee Competency Dictionary.

This means the competencies the panel may assess are published before the interview. For each competency, prepare one or two true examples with a clear situation, what you did, and the result. Our Interview Lab builds those examples into structured STAR answers and runs mock panel questions against them, so you have practised your answers before the interview.

What happens after the interview?

Your overall performance decides whether you enter the Consideration for Hire Pool. HRFE is explicit that being in the pool is not a guarantee of employment: it contacts candidates as budget and operations require, it can extend the pool for up to one year past its expiry, and anyone still in the pool when it ends has to reapply to the next general recruitment.

When a hiring group is needed, candidates move through security clearance, then the integrity interview, which HRFE describes as designed to elicit truthful information and gain insight into behaviours that do not align with the position, then the NFPA 1582 medical. Those who pass everything are offered Firefighter 4th Class in a career training class.

The 2026 posting listed the Firefighter 4th Class salary at $55,384.95 under the IAFF Local 268 collective agreement, working an E Platoon shift of 42 hours a week, four days a week, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work locations are assigned after training.

What should you do before the next competition?

  1. Clear any N from your licence now. It has to be a full Class 5 before the posting date, and that runs on the licensing office's schedule.
  2. Find your Grade 12 proof. A transcript only counts if it shows a graduation date or is certified.
  3. Start aerobic training months ahead. The 42.5 VO2 max cut-off removes candidates before the job events begin.
  4. Write your competency examples. HRFE has published the competencies it may score.
  5. Keep your record clean and your history accurate. The integrity interview and the background checks come late in the process, and they cover everything up to that point.
  6. Watch for the next window. Our Halifax department guide tracks the requirements and the posting as they change.

The requirements, phases, dates, test standards and salary in this guide come from Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency's Work for Halifax Fire page, read on September 23, 2026, which describes the 2026 competition. HRFE marks its dates as subject to change and has not published its next competition, so its page and your own posting always govern.

No. HRFE says placement in its Consideration for Hire Pool is not a guarantee of employment. Candidates in the pool are called forward to the final phases as budget and operations require, the pool can be extended up to one year past its expiry, and anyone left in it has to reapply to the next general recruitment.
