Halifax is one of the most accessible major departments in Canada: the only document required at application is proof of Grade 12, there are no candidate fees at any stage, and recruits are hired as 4th Class Firefighters and trained in-house. Selection includes aptitude testing, the Gledhill physical protocol (career candidates add the shuttle run), background screening with a dedicated Integrity Interview, and an NFPA 1582 medical. The process runs about 6 months from application to hire pool, and there are no lateral transfers, even for IAFF members.

Entry-level hiring with no fire certifications required. The department trains recruits in-house. Medical certifications and driver licensing are the differentiators.

A novice class 5 with an N is not eligible for the upgrade to Class 3 with air brakes, so an N must be cleared to a full Class 5 before the posting date. The Class 3 with air brakes endorsement itself is obtained during recruit training.

The hiring process

Halifax accepts applications only during a short posted window, January 6 to 20 for the 2026 cycle, through the municipality's online job application system. You must attach exactly four things: a resume, a cover letter, a copy of the front and back of your driver's licence, and proof of Grade 12. Do not attach any other certifications or documents, because Halifax warns extras can cause errors in your submission.
Proof of Grade 12 can be a Grade 12 certificate, GED, community college diploma, or university degree. A high school transcript is accepted only if it clearly shows a graduation date, or is certified by stamp or signature that you graduated.
Submit early. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Atlantic time on the closing day, late submissions are not accepted, and you can only apply once, with no changes to your resume or cover letter after you submit. Halifax warns that waiting until the last few days can lead to disqualification if your application is not completed correctly.
Use an email account you check daily: Halifax sends all status updates by email and removes candidates who do not respond within 24 hours. If your licence carries an N, complete the requirements for a full Class 5 before the posting date, because an N makes you ineligible for the Class 3 air brakes upgrade that recruits must earn in training.

Candidates who meet the application requirements are invited to write the FPSI Online Firefighter Test, with instructions emailed after the posting closes. For the 2026 cycle the test dates were February 4 and 7, and Halifax notes all dates can change with operational requirements.
The test is written online from a personal computer and is not compatible with tablets or phones. If you do not have a computer or an internet connection, Halifax suggests borrowing one from family or a friend, or using a public library or employment centre.
Prepare ahead of time: confirm your equipment and software work, and read every instruction from HRFE and FPSI carefully, because the emails contain required steps. Halifax posts an orientation guide and a proctoring guide for the online test; work through both before test day.
Beyond the department's guides, steady practice with timed reading comprehension, basic math, and mechanical reasoning in quiet exam conditions is the most reliable preparation for firefighter aptitude tests.

This phase is in person in Halifax, and for the 2026 cycle it was scheduled for September 28 to October 8, months after the aptitude test. Testing follows the Gledhill Fitness Protocol: VO2 max testing, ladder climb, claustrophobia test, hose carry and climb, rope pull, hose advance and drag, ladder lift, victim drag, and forced entry. Some events are pass or fail and some are timed, and you must complete every event successfully.
The VO2 max test measures aerobic fitness directly using expired air analysis while you run on a treadmill, with speed and incline increasing until you reach maximum intensity. You must attain 42.5 mL/kg/min to continue; candidates who do not reach it are removed from the competition.
Plan for about three hours on site. Bring a towel, exercise clothing, running shoes, a water bottle and a snack, and skip sports drinks, which Halifax says may impair your performance. Eat a light meal up to two hours before testing, do not smoke or drink caffeine that day, and avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, vaping, or cannabis for 24 hours before.
Halifax recommends moderate to high intensity aerobic workouts of 30 to 45 minutes, four to five times per week, such as jogging, cycling, swimming, or rowing. Start that training when you apply, not when the invitation arrives, because the aerobic standard is the cut that removes candidates. The interview is competency based: you will be asked to draw on examples from past work, volunteer, or personal experience. Halifax lists the competencies it may measure as Communication, Customer Service, Stress Management, Teamwork and Cooperation, Values and Ethics, and Valuing Diversity.
For the 2026 cycle, interviews were scheduled for October 20 to November 5, with date, time, and location confirmed by email. Halifax links its Employee Competency Dictionary and a behavioural interview preparation page from the recruitment page; read both, then build one or two true stories for each listed competency.
Structure each story with the situation, the specific actions you took, and the result, and practise telling it out loud in under two minutes. Real, ordinary examples told clearly beat dramatic ones told vaguely.
After interviews, successful candidates are placed in a Consideration for Hire Pool, which Halifax states is not a guarantee of employment; hiring depends on budget and operational needs. The pool can be extended up to one year past its expiry, and anyone still in it after that must reapply in the next general recruitment.

Line up your references early and warn them the call may come many months after you applied. Keep your driving record clean through the whole process, because the abstract is pulled at this stage, not at application.

The Integrity Interview is a separate, dedicated interview designed to elicit truthful information and to surface behaviour that does not align with the requirements of the position.
Halifax states that candidates are evaluated continuously on honesty in every interaction with HRFE staff, so treat every email and conversation as part of the assessment.
Disclose anything questionable yourself rather than hoping it goes unnoticed; a disclosed mistake can be weighed in context, while a discovered omission usually ends a candidacy.

The medical assessment determines fitness for duty against NFPA 1582, the Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments. It is one of the final phases, scheduled once you are contacted from the Consideration for Hire Pool.
You can read the full standard at no cost: Halifax's page directs you to the NFPA site, where creating a free profile and selecting Free Access opens the newest edition. The page also links an overview of the medical assessment; review both so you know what will be examined.
Deal with correctable items well before this stage, such as an outdated vision prescription or unmanaged blood pressure, and bring documentation for any ongoing condition and how it is treated. Answer all medical history questions completely and honestly.
Candidates who complete every phase are offered a Firefighter 4th Class position in an HRFE training class, at a posted salary of $55,384.95 under the IAFF Local 268 collective agreement, with training on a Monday to Friday day shift of 42 hours per week.
