Could You Pass a Firefighter Physical Test Today? An Honest Self-Check
Six things every Canadian firefighter physical test measures, how to test yourself against each one this week, and what your results tell you about where to start.
You do not need a testing centre to find out where you stand. Every Canadian firefighter physical test measures the same six capacities, in different orders and under different loads, and you can put a number on each of them this week with a stairwell, a weighted pack and something heavy to pull.
Do that first. It turns "I should get in shape" into a list with two or three items on it, which is the difference between training and worrying.
What do these tests actually measure?
- Loaded stair or incline work. Climbing under load for minutes rather than seconds. It opens most protocols and sets your heart rate for everything after it.
- Grip endurance. Not maximum grip. The ability to hold on across repeated efforts, which is what quietly ends a circuit.
- Dragging and pulling. Moving a heavy object horizontally with a rope or a handle, usually after your heart rate is already high.
- Carrying. Awkward objects at your sides or on a shoulder, over a set distance, sometimes up stairs.
- Overhead and repeated arm work. Raising, extending, pushing and pulling above shoulder height, where fatigue arrives fastest.
- Aerobic capacity. The engine underneath all of it, and the thing some protocols test directly with a shuttle run or a treadmill stage before you touch a job-related station.
The self-check
Give yourself a week, roughly one capacity per session, and record numbers rather than impressions.
Stairs under load. Put 15 to 20 kg in a pack and climb continuously for three minutes at a rate you could sustain. Record the floors or steps completed and how hard it felt out of ten. If you had to stop, that is your first priority.
Grip. Hang from a bar for time, twice, with two minutes between. Then carry two heavy objects at your sides for 40 metres. If the second hang is much shorter than the first, you have grip strength without grip endurance, and endurance is the version these tests measure.
Drag. Load a sled, a heavy bag or a tyre to roughly 35 to 40 kg and pull it 25 metres, hand over hand where you can. Record the time, and note whether your grip or your legs gave out first.
Carry. Two objects of 15 to 20 kg each, 40 metres, without setting them down. Note whether your hands, your shoulders or your breathing ended it.
Overhead. Raise a ladder-weight object, or press a moderate weight overhead, for 90 seconds of continuous work. Note when your arms began to shake.
Aerobic. A 20-metre shuttle run to a published stage, or 12 minutes of continuous running for distance. This is the number worth repeating monthly, because it moves slowly and everything else rests on it.
What your results are telling you
Two or three of those will be clearly worse than the rest. Those are your next month, not the whole list.
- Aerobic behind everything else? Build the base first. It takes the longest, and every other capacity improves on top of it.
- Grip failing before your legs? Add loaded carries and hangs three times a week, and stop training grip to failure at the end of every session, which is how candidates arrive on test day with nothing left.
- Stairs fine, drag terrible? You have an engine and no horizontal strength. Sled or bag work twice a week closes that faster than most people expect.
- All six acceptable but you were wrecked afterwards? That is pacing, and it is the cheapest thing here to fix. Repeat the circuit at 80 percent effort until you know what steady feels like.
Technique is worth more than fitness on two of the six
Most of this list is trainable capacity. Two items are mostly skill, and they are where an average performer beats a fitter one.
The drag. Hand over hand, low, with your hips behind the load and your feet planted rather than running. Candidates who try to walk backwards while pulling lose to their own balance, and the ones who grip too high fight the rope instead of the load.
The stair climb. A steady rate you can hold for the full duration beats a fast start every time. The event is designed so that the pace which feels comfortable in the first thirty seconds is not the pace you can hold at two minutes.
Rehearse both under load before test day. Neither takes long to learn, and neither improves at all if you only ever train them fresh.
How to build the next four weeks
Three sessions a week is enough for most candidates who are also working. A workable shape:
- Session one, loaded work. Stair or incline climbing under a pack, then carries. Build the duration first and the load second.
- Session two, strength and drag. Lower-body strength, then sled or bag drags with full recovery between efforts, so you are training the effort rather than your ability to keep going while exhausted.
- Session three, aerobic. Continuous work at a pace you can hold, once a week extended past the length of your test.
Grip goes into all three as carries and hangs rather than as a session of its own, and it never runs to failure more than once a week.
Two rules save more candidates than any programme detail. Do not add a new maximal lift inside six weeks of a test date, and do not train a hard loaded session the two days before you test.
Turning the results into a plan
If you already know which test you are sitting, train that sequence specifically. Retest the same six items in four weeks. Numbers that move tell you the plan is working. Numbers that do not tell you which session to change. Both beat the alternative, which is finding out on the day, at a testing centre you paid to attend.
This is a self-assessment, not a test protocol, and the numbers above are training references rather than pass standards. Your department's published standard is the one that counts, and medical clearance before hard loaded training is worth having.

- How fit do you need to be to pass a firefighter physical test?
- Fit enough to work continuously under roughly 23 to 34 kg of added load for eight to fifteen minutes without your grip or your pacing failing. That is a different quality from being able to lift heavy or run fast, which is why strong candidates fail these tests and average-looking ones pass them.
- How long does it take to get ready for a firefighter physical test?
- Twelve weeks is the working assumption for a candidate who is generally active but has not trained under load. Someone starting from very little may need longer, and someone already doing loaded carries and stair work may need less. The honest way to answer it for yourself is to test the six capacities below and see which ones are furthest behind.
- Can I train for a firefighter physical test without a gym?
- Yes, though it is slower for the loading elements. A stairwell, a weighted pack and something heavy to drag cover most of the ground. A good program gives you a substitution at every equipment tier rather than assuming a full facility.
- What is the most common reason candidates fail a firefighter physical test?
- Grip and pacing, not strength. Grip endurance fades across a circuit and takes the later events with it, and a candidate who starts too fast on the stair climb has nothing left for the drag. Both are trainable, and both stay invisible if you only test yourself on single lifts.
- Should I lose weight before a firefighter physical test?
- Not as a goal in itself. These tests reward the ability to carry external load, so what matters is the work you can do rather than the number on a scale. Train the capacities, eat to support the training, and let body composition follow.
- What should I do if my test is six weeks away?
- Prioritise. Loaded stair or incline work and grip endurance move fastest and matter most, rehearsing the specific events comes next, and general strength work is the first thing to cut. Do not introduce a new maximal lift inside six weeks of a test date.
