How to Become a Firefighter with the Calgary Fire Department (2026 Requirements)
How to become a firefighter in Calgary: the Calgary Fire Department's requirements, its ten hiring steps, the NTN written test, and every published fee.
The Calgary Fire Department hires entry-level candidates and trains them itself, so you do not need a single fire certification to apply. You do need a clean record, the right licences by set points in the process, and time for a ten-step process that runs through a panel interview, a polygraph and the CPAT before a Selection Committee decides who goes on the eligibility list. Here are the requirements and stages, taken from the City of Calgary's recruitment page and CFD's own candidate materials.
What are the minimum requirements to apply to Calgary Fire?
You must be 18 or older, eligible to work in Canada, and have had no criminal activity in the past 3 years. You also need a Canadian high school diploma, an equivalent or a journeyman certificate, plus a valid Class 5 licence that is not a graduated licence, with fewer than 6 demerit points on your abstract.
Three details are easy to miss. A past conviction needs a pardon or record suspension, not just the passage of time. Schooling completed outside Canada needs a Foreign Credential Recognition evaluation, which takes time to obtain, so start it before an intake opens. And the City accepts a provincial or territorial equivalent of the Class 5, but asks for proof that it is not a graduated licence.
What do you need before the Selection Committee?
Calgary does not ask for its first aid, CPR and commercial licence credentials when you apply, but it does ask before the process ends. Before Step 9, the Selection Committee, you must hold an Advanced First Aid course of at least 80 hours (or equivalent), CPR at the Health Care Provider level or Basic Life Support, and a Class 1, 2 or 3 licence with an air brake (Q) endorsement.
Your immunizations must be current by that point too. None of this is needed on the day you apply, but do not leave it late: a long first aid course and a road test both depend on someone else's schedule, and arriving at Step 9 without them stops your file.
What are the steps in the Calgary Fire hiring process?
CFD runs ten steps, in this order. The City's recruitment page lists a fee on three of them and none on the other seven.
- Online application.
- Aptitude test through the National Testing Network, $55 USD.
- Document submission.
- Process preparation and Personal History Statement (PHS) review.
- In-person panel interview in Calgary.
- Polygraph in Calgary, $500 plus GST.
- CPAT at CFD facilities, $200 plus GST.
- Reference check.
- Selection Committee and eligibility list.
- Conditional job offer.
You must complete each step to continue. Missing the deadline on any part of the aptitude stage removes you from the process, and so does failing to complete the CPAT. CFD also warns that small errors or missed instructions can stall or end a candidacy, so follow every instruction exactly, starting with the first form.
What written test does Calgary use?
Calgary tests through the National Testing Network (NTN). Per CFD's Step 2 candidate materials for the 2026 intake, the stage has three parts: the NTN Fire Express Exam plus Parts 1 and 2 of the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA), all taken through an NTN account that CFD invites you to create. The City's recruitment page describes the aptitude test more briefly, as a two-part online exam, so follow the instructions CFD sends for your own intake.
CFD's materials also set practical rules for the test:
- Register with the same name and email you applied with.
- Everything is online, unproctored and needs no booking. Allow about two hours for Fire Express and 45 minutes for each PSSA part, and note the PSSA parts need a computer.
- Scores from a previous NTN test do not transfer to Fire Express.
- Do not complete the NTN PHQ or job history, because CFD collects that separately.
- There are no accommodations, since extra time is already built into the allotment.
- If you have a technical problem, contact NTN support first, not CFD.
Nobody publishes a section list for Fire Express. What NTN does document is that its firefighter testing measures human relations, mechanical aptitude, reading and math, so prepare those four areas. The PSSA is a different kind of test: you rate how far you agree with statements and make judgments about situations shown in photographs. There is nothing to revise for it. Answer honestly and consistently, because CFD checks integrity again at the PHS and the polygraph.
For the aptitude side, our timed Fire Express-style mock, part of Semparo Pro, draws a fresh paper of judgment and human relations, mechanical, math and reading questions every sitting, then closes with an unscored lesson on inventory-style statements like those in the PSSA's self-report part, so the style is familiar before the day. Because the official composition is unpublished, the section balance in that mock is ours rather than NTN's, and because CFD has changed aptitude vendors before, the test named on your own intake is the one to plan around.
What happens at the Personal History Statement stage?
By Step 4 you have been assigned a Recruitment Officer who manages your file from then on (the City's page mentions the assignment at both Step 3 and Step 4). You must watch CFD's Hiring Process Preparation Presentation in full, then complete the FD 1242 Personal History Statement and upload it to your applicant profile before a firm deadline, which in the 2026 intake was roughly two weeks from the advancement email.
Write it from records rather than memory, because it is verified at the polygraph and read again in full at the Selection Committee. If you remember something after submitting, never edit or delete what is already on file. CFD has an update form for exactly that, FD 1479: add the new entry, re-upload the whole form, and email your Recruitment Officer each time so it is logged. If a disclosure involves alcohol and driving, CFD asks you to run the figures through a blood alcohol concentration calculator and include the result.
How hard is the Calgary panel interview?
According to CFD's own Step 2 candidate materials, fewer than 40 percent of candidates succeeded at the panel interview in 2025. Plan to give it more of your preparation time than any single test.
The interview is an in-person behavioural descriptive interview in Calgary, and the City's page says answers must follow the STAR format: Situation, Task, Actions, Result. Build a set of true stories that cover teamwork, conflict, integrity, safety and service to others, then rehearse them out loud until you can keep to the structure under pressure. CFD also runs free candidate events, including an in-person interview workshop where Recruitment Officers conduct mock interviews. Attend one if you can.
For structured practice on your own schedule, Semparo Pro includes the Interview Lab's STAR story builder and interview question coaching as well as the Fire Express mock above. You can compare what each plan includes on the pricing page.
What do the polygraph and the CPAT involve?
The polygraph verifies your PHS in person in Calgary for $500 plus GST, and the CPAT is an eight-station physical test at $200 plus GST at CFD facilities. Prepare for the polygraph weeks earlier: submit a complete, honest PHS, and put anything you have remembered since on the update form.
The CPAT stations simulate tasks at a fire scene. If you test with CFD, you can attend two orientations and two timed trials before your scheduled test. Use all four, because they are where you learn the equipment and find a pace you can hold. The City also links an exercise guide from its recruitment page, written for the physical demands of recruit training.
What happens at the reference check, the Selection Committee and the job offer?
You need at least three professional references, and one must be your current employer. Your whole file, including every PHS update, then goes to the Selection Committee, where items of concern can still end a candidacy. Successful candidates are placed on an eligibility list, and conditional job offers go to candidates selected from it.
Personal references from family or friends are not accepted. Because your current employer has to be one of your references, talk to your employer before CFD calls them.
The conditional job offer carries its own conditions. You provide a new five-year driver's abstract with no more than 6 demerits and a new criminal record check with a vulnerable sector check, then complete a medical and fitness assessment built on the NFPA 1580 standard, including a treadmill test with a minimum of 12 minutes and 30 seconds. Uniform fittings and a full-day recruit orientation with your original documents follow. CFD does not pay moving expenses for applicants relocating from outside Calgary.
How long does it take, and how competitive is it?
CFD's July 2026 recruitment newsletter says the process can take 9 months or longer, with some candidates holding on the eligibility list well beyond that. On competition, the City's newsroom reported in May 2026 that CFD received over 2,700 recruit applications the previous year and graduated 119 new probationary firefighters.
The intake dates also change from year to year. The City's newsroom gave March 31, 2025 as the closing date for the 2025 posting, and June 1 to 30, 2026 for the 2026 intake. Plan to have your credentials finished before the next intake opens, whatever its dates. Do not time them to last year's.
Is Calgary hiring right now?
Not as of September 16, 2026. The City's recruitment page says the application intake is currently closed, and asks candidates to use the time to prepare for the next one.
Use the time before the next intake for the items that take the longest: the first aid course, the licence upgrade and air brake endorsement, a Foreign Credential Recognition evaluation if you need one, and interview stories you can tell in STAR order. Our Calgary Fire Department guide shows the current intake status with the date we last checked it, and if you follow the department while signed in, you get an email when we confirm that applications have opened.
Calgary's requirements, fees and test vendor change between intakes. The City of Calgary's recruitment page and newsroom were checked in September 2026, and details from CFD's candidate materials reflect the 2026 intake. The posting for your own intake governs. Ask your Recruitment Officer about anything it does not cover.
