What a firefighter background check involves

Do firefighters get background checks?
Yes, and near enough universally. 74 of the 121 published processes we track include a records check of some kind before hire.
What that usually means in practice is a criminal record check, very often with vulnerable sector screening because firefighters attend medical calls involving children and vulnerable adults. Departments commonly add a driver's abstract, since you will drive emergency apparatus, and employment references contacted directly rather than through the resume.
Timing matters more than people expect. Most departments run these late, after the interview and often after a conditional offer, and several ask you not to submit anything until they request it. Ordering a check early can mean paying for one that has expired by the time it is wanted.
Do Canadian firefighters take a polygraph?
Almost never. Exactly 1 of the 121 processes we track publishes a polygraph stage: Calgary.
This is the clearest difference between Canadian and American hiring, and it is why so much advice online does not apply here. If you are not applying to Calgary, the odds are you will never sit one. If you are, it is a published stage with a published cost, and it exists to verify what you already wrote in your Personal History Statement rather than to catch you out.

It is standard in American hiring and rare here. Calgary is the one department in our data that names one, its FD 1242, with a separate FD 1479 form for adding anything you remember afterwards. The rule on those forms is worth knowing wherever you apply: you add to the record, you never quietly revise it.

Most Canadian departments assess against NFPA 1582, the occupational medical standard for firefighters, which covers vision, hearing, cardiac and respiratory function, and conditions that would make it unsafe to work in breathing apparatus. Some publish their disqualifying-conditions list openly, which is worth reading before your appointment rather than after.
If something in your history is borderline, raise it with your own doctor early. A condition explained with records behind it is a very different conversation from one discovered on the day.
What is not standard here
- No department in our data publishes a credit check as part of firefighter hiring.
- Child abuse registry checks appear in 2: Winnipeg and Halifax.
Departments can and do ask for things they have not published. Where a page is silent, confirm with the department rather than assuming.
