WFX-FIT 12-Week Program

A 12-week periodized program built for the national wildland fitness circuit: the pump carries, the kilometre hose-pack carry with its fifty ramp crossings, and the charged hose advance, all inside 14 minutes 30 seconds. The plan develops loaded carrying capacity, ramp and incline power, drag strength, and the metronome pace that gets a crew member through the circuit every single season. Complete the PAR-Q+ readiness screen and consult a physician before starting any new exercise program. The loaded circuit intervals train VO2 max alongside work capacity; the VO2 Max Builder adds a dedicated aerobic block where a department measures that number outright.

What WFX-FIT is and who requires it

WFX-FIT is the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 wildland firefighters, administered under the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. Provincial and territorial wildfire agencies use it as the fitness gate for initial-attack and sustained-action crews, and export crews must hold the national exchange standard. Unlike a structural pre-hire test you pass once, WFX-FIT is seasonal: returning crew members requalify, typically every spring, so this program doubles as an annual pre-season build.

The circuit at a glance

The test is one continuous timed circuit on a 40 metre course, done in work-out clothing with a weighted belt: carry a 28.5 kg pump on your back for 160 metres crossing a ramp every 20 metres, hand-carry the same pump 80 metres on the flat, lift a 25 kg hose pack to your back and carry it a full kilometre crossing the ramp every 20 metres, then drag a weighted sled that takes 18.5 kg of pull force for 80 metres. The national exchange standard is 14 minutes 30 seconds. A non-timed health screening comes first, and agencies may post their own cut-offs, so treat the CIFFC description and your agency's posting as the authorities.

The ramp is the test

The ramp is 1.22 metres tall at a 35 degree pitch, and the circuit makes you climb and descend it roughly 58 times: about 8 crossings during the pump-on-back carry and about 50 during the kilometre hose-pack carry. Each crossing is a loaded step-up followed by a controlled loaded descent, and the descents quietly beat up your quads as much as the climbs tax your lungs. This program treats loaded step-ups, incline work, and eccentric control as first-class training targets from week one.

Carry pump on back: 28.5 kg, 160 metres

The opening component puts the heaviest load of the test on your back while you cross the ramp eight times. It rewards a stable trunk, a short powerful stride, and the discipline to open the circuit at a strong but repeatable effort rather than a sprint. Heavy ruck carries, back squats, and step-ups under load build it. Practise breathing against a loaded pack: exhale on the drive up the ramp, recover on the flat.

Hand carry pump: 80 metres on the flat

The same pump comes off your back and into your hands for two flat laps. Held in front or at your side, the load now taxes grip, arms, and upper back, and punishes a collapsed posture. Farmer and front-loaded carries, heavy kettlebell or sandbag work, and grip training map directly. Switch hands methodically at the turns if you carry one-sided, and keep the chest tall so your breathing stays open.

Hose pack lift and carry: 25 kg for a full kilometre

This is the crux: lift a 25 kg hose pack from the ground to your back, then cover one kilometre in 40 metre laps, crossing the ramp on every lap, roughly fifty crossings in all. It is far and away the longest component, and the circuit is usually won or lost here. The program builds toward continuous loaded carries of a kilometre and beyond, with ramp or stair crossings folded in, so that on test day the distance feels rehearsed rather than shocking. Practise the ground-to-back lift too: a clean lift saves seconds and your lower back.

Charged hose advance: the 18.5 kg sled drag

The circuit finishes with an 80 metre drag of a sled that takes 18.5 kilograms of pull force to move, simulating advancing a charged hose line. It arrives on legs that have already climbed the ramp nearly sixty times, which is exactly why this program trains drags in a fatigued state. Lean into the strap, keep the line of pull long and low, and drive with continuous short steps: stop-start jerking costs more than it saves.

The pacing math

The circuit totals roughly 1,320 metres of loaded movement. Finishing in 14 minutes 30 seconds means averaging about 5.5 kilometres per hour, a genuinely brisk walk, while carrying 25 to 28.5 kg for most of it and climbing the ramp about 58 times. That is an aerobic test wearing a strength costume. The program therefore builds a big loaded-walking engine first, adds ramp power on top, and finishes with full-circuit rehearsals at target pace so the required rhythm is automatic.

Screening, attire, and the weighted belt

A non-timed pre-participation screening precedes the circuit. The test itself is done in work-out clothing, running shoes or work boots where an agency requires them, and a weighted belt. Train at least some sessions with a hip-loaded belt or a snug pack hip strap so the sensation is familiar. If your agency tests in boots, do part of your late-phase training in the boots you will wear.

Seasonal requalification and test day

Book your test date early in the season and count backwards twelve weeks to start this program; returning members who kept a base can compress the first phase. On test day, arrive hydrated, warm up with ten minutes of easy movement plus a few ramp-height step-ups and one short drag, open the pump carry at your rehearsed pace, and treat the kilometre carry as laps of forty metres rather than one enormous distance. The standard rewards the candidate who is boringly consistent for fourteen and a half minutes.

The 12 weeks

Benchmarks

Test yourself every four weeks so peak week holds no surprises.

  • Week 4: Loaded carry test. With a 35 to 40 lb pack, cover 1.6 km continuously at the fastest pace you can hold, adding 10 step-ups to a knee-height box or stair every 200 m. Record total time, effort out of 10, and how your shoulders and low back feel at the end. This is your baseline engine number; it should fall meaningfully by week 8.
  • Week 8: Half-circuit simulation. Continuous, with a 45 to 55 lb pack for the carries: 80 m carry with a ramp, stair, or box crossing every 20 m, then 40 m hand-carry of a 50 to 60 lb object, then 500 m pack carry with a crossing every 20 m, then a 40 m heavy drag. Record total time and which component slowed you most; that component gets priority in the Peak phase.
  • Week 12: Taper rehearsal. Three to four days before your test, run one crisp half-effort rehearsal: 200 to 300 m of loaded carrying with a handful of crossings and one short drag, all at your intended test rhythm, feeling fast and controlled. The goal is sharpness and confidence, not fatigue. Rest, hydrate, and sleep well in the remaining days.
