West Vancouver recruits through the joint North Shore tri-municipal process with the City and District of North Vancouver, run once per year through northshorefirerecruiting.ca. Applicants need NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 2 with a Pro Board or IFSAC seal, high school graduation plus a year of post-secondary or full-time work experience, a BC Class 3 or higher licence with air brake at application, a current First Responder or Emergency Medical Responder licence, and a pass on the Langara, University of Alberta, or University of Victoria fitness test. After an online psychometric assessment, each municipality shortlists independently for station orientations and Fire Chief panel interviews.

NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II plus HazMat Operations are required before applying. Budget for fire school before you can compete.

Proof of a pass can go in with the application or be emailed to nsfr@cnv.org afterwards, but it must be submitted before you progress to pre-screening and station orientation. The 2026 guide set August 31, 2026 as the emailing deadline and accepted only passes dated August 31, 2025 or later. No other physical abilities test is accepted.

Per the IAFF 1525 collective agreement, not less than 60% of fire department employees must reside in West Vancouver or listed nearby areas, with up to 40% allowed in extended areas upon written Fire Chief approval.

The hiring process

West Vancouver hires through one shared annual intake with the City and District of North Vancouver, posted on northshorefirerecruiting.ca. You can only apply while the window is open, and the 2026 process is already closed, so watch the site for the next intake and get your documents ready now.
Have three files ready before you start: a resume, a cover letter, and every supporting document scanned into a single PDF. The applicant guide says the online portal takes about 45 minutes and tells you not to wait until the final day in case of technical problems.
The supporting PDF must include only the listed items, in the order the guide gives: your NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 2 certificate with a Pro Board or IFSAC seal (a temporary completion document from your fire school is acceptable at first), your high school transcript (a diploma is not accepted), a driver's abstract issued within 60 days of the closing date, post-secondary transcripts or trade records showing 30 credits or a clearly indicated trade qualification, your medical responder licence, proof of a Langara, University of Alberta, or University of Victoria fitness test pass, the completed Community Service Experience Verification Form, and only the named fire-specific course certificates.
Most applications die here on detail, not qualifications. The FAQ lists the common screen-outs: no high school transcript, post-secondary documents that do not prove 30 credits, an abstract older than 60 days, an expired or missing first aid licence, and missing documents. Everything must be submitted by the closing date or the application is treated as incomplete and goes no further.

If your application passes screening, you get an emailed link to an online assessment and a two-week window to complete it. It is not conducted in person.
The content changed between cycles. The 2025 guide described a combined assessment covering business reasoning, situational judgement, basic math, mechanical aptitude, and spatial sense plus a psychometric component; the 2026 guide lists only a psychometric assessment measuring soft skills, personality traits, risk tolerance, and driving behaviours. Check the current applicant guide for what your year includes.
Answer the psychometric questions honestly and consistently. They measure fit with the departments' values and workplace and driver safety, and inconsistent answers read worse than imperfect ones. If cognitive sections run in your year, warm up beforehand on reading comprehension, interpreting tables, basic math, and mechanical reasoning.
Do it early in the window, in a quiet place with a reliable connection. Additional time is available on request for candidates with a medical condition or disability, including learning disabilities, with medical documentation required.

After the assessment, each of the three municipalities independently selects candidates from the shared pool, so you can advance with West Vancouver alone or with more than one department at once. You will be contacted by email if you are shortlisted.
This stage evaluates your qualifications through individual and team assessments. Everything happens in person on the North Shore, so plan to be available locally on the dates you are given.
Keep every licence current through this stage. The FAQ warns that expired licences may disqualify you and that you will be asked for updated copies as you advance. The 2026 guide also says fitness test results are verified at this point if you did not submit them with your application.
Treat the station orientation as a working interview. Crews notice how you listen, follow direction, and pull your weight in team tasks, so arrive early, fit for work, and ready to take part rather than watch.

Selected candidates attend a panel interview with the Fire Chiefs and other representatives. Prepare short, specific examples that show the qualities the guide names, including teamwork, communication, good judgement, accountability, and community engagement.
Offers are conditional on at least four things: passing an NFPA 1582 medical with a certified physician (the municipality pays for the medical), a Police Information Check with vulnerable sector clearance, a new driver's abstract showing the same safe driving record as at application, and work-related reference checks. Read the NFPA 1582 standard early and talk to your physician if anything concerns you.
Not getting an immediate offer is not the end. Candidates may be placed in an eligibility pool with one or more of the municipalities for future openings, and each municipality confirms separately what you must do to stay in its pool.
If West Vancouver hires you, the IAFF 1525 collective agreement sets living boundaries: not less than 60 per cent of department employees must live in West Vancouver or the listed nearby areas, and up to 40 per cent may live in extended areas with written Fire Chief approval. Factor this into your housing plans before you accept.

Worth knowing

The three North Shore departments recruit jointly once per year through northshorefirerecruiting.ca; the site states the 2026 tri-municipal process is now closed.
The Langara College fitness test is also accepted alongside the University of Alberta and University of Victoria tests.
Preferred qualifications include PCP or ACP licensing, progress toward post-secondary education, fire service certificates such as auto extrication, confined space, HazMat, rope rescue, swift water, and lifesaving, and demonstrated community service.
