The recruitment page is still headed "2026 Recruitment" and still links that guide with no note that the window has passed, so the page reads current when it is not. Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich and Victoria recruit jointly and one application covers all four.

Four south Vancouver Island departments recruit as one: Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich and Victoria run a single competition that builds a shared eligibility pool, so one application is considered by all four and the number hired from the pool differs each year. Candidates must arrive pre-certified with Firefighter Level 1 and 2 to the NFPA 1010 standard, accredited by IFSAC or Pro Board, a recognized BC medical certification anywhere from First Responder up to Critical Care Paramedic, and a BC Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement. A pass on the University of Victoria or University of Alberta Firefighter Fitness Test within one year of the posting date is required. Selection runs through an online written exam proctored by an external firm, a joint assessment day with a mini-interview station, and a behavioural-descriptive panel interview, after which each department runs its own remaining steps.

The hiring process

You only reach this stage if your application passes review. Only candidates selected to advance are contacted, and the invitation includes the written exam details, so watch the email account you applied with. The 2026 guide lists estimated dates of July 17 and 18 and warns that all dates are estimates subject to change.
In 2026 the exams are held online and proctored by an external firm, BL Associates, and the same stage includes psychometric testing. The guide describes the exams as measuring the knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics the job requires, so expect aptitude-style questions alongside personality-style ones.
Answer psychometric portions honestly and consistently rather than trying to guess a preferred profile. These instruments flag contradictory answers, and the departments are screening for fit, not a script.
For any proctored online exam, arrange a quiet private room, a reliable internet connection and government photo ID, and follow the invitation instructions exactly. If your invitation does not spell out the technical requirements, confirm with the department before exam day.

Invitations to the in-person joint assessment day are based on your written exam results and the application review, so this stage is earned at the previous one. The 2026 guide lists estimated dates of September 26 and 27, held for all four departments together.
The guide states the day includes a mini-interview panel station but does not publish the rest of the station list, so confirm the day's contents with the department when you are invited. Treat the mini-interview as a real interview: prepare short, direct answers on why you want this career, what your certifications cover and what your relevant experience taught you.
Each department reserves the right to limit how many candidates proceed through any stage, so showing up prepared and professional matters. Bring exactly what your invitation asks for, arrive early and treat every interaction on site as evaluated.

The panel asks behavioural-descriptive questions about past life experiences as they relate to the firefighter role. The 2026 guide gives a late October estimate, and from this stage onward all remaining steps are run by the individual departments, so you may hear from Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich or Victoria separately.
Prepare specific, true stories from work, emergency services, trades, volunteering or team settings, and structure each around the situation, what you did and the result. Behavioural formats reward concrete detail over general claims, so practise saying each story out loud in under two minutes.
Map your examples to the qualities the departments say they screen for: teamwork, integrity, problem solving, resilience, continuous learning and public service. The guide's supplemental experience lists, which include fire, forest fire service, search and rescue, EMS or BCAS, healthcare, Coast Guard, law enforcement, military, trades, coaching and second languages, are a reliable guide to the experience panels value.
The guide's self-evaluation questionnaire is worth reading before the interview. It shows exactly what the departments want you to have thought through, including shift work, traumatic calls, a paramilitary working environment and a 12-month probation with daily evaluation.

Reference checks run before candidates are selected for the firefighter eligibility pool, and the 2026 guide gives a January 2027 estimate. The departments ask for two contacts you have worked for recently and reported to in some manner, so these must be supervisors, not character references.
Pick people who saw your work directly and recently, confirm they are willing and reachable, and warn them the call may come months after you applied. A reference who is surprised, vague or slow to respond weakens you at the exact moment the pool is being chosen.
Brief each reference on the role and the qualities the departments assess, such as teamwork, reliability and how you handle pressure, so their examples line up with what the checker asks about.

Before employment, the departments require an updated Police Information Check with vulnerable sector screening, a driver's abstract and a pre-placement medical assessment, and verification of your licensing or certification may also be required. The 2026 guide places this conditional-offer stage at April 2027, run as each department needs intake.
Individual departments may require a University of Victoria or University of Alberta Firefighter fitness test dated within one year of the eligibility pool's creation, so plan a retest if your result is getting old. Keep your BC Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement, your medical certification and your other credentials valid the entire time you sit in the pool.
Being in the eligibility pool does not guarantee an offer. Candidates are contacted when a position opens, and the number hired from the pool differs each year, so keep everything current rather than scrambling when the call comes.
Protect your record through this whole period: a clean driving history and a clean police check are conditions of hire. Once hired, you may be required to live within the hiring department's boundaries, so factor that into your planning.
