How to become a firefighter in Vancouver

Verified 2026-07
Model A: We train you
Department-specific

Vancouver hires entry-level and trains recruits itself, but sets a distinctive medical bar at application: a valid BC EMALB licence at First Responder with Schedule 2 endorsements or higher, maintained in BC throughout the process. Applicants also need two years of accumulated post-high-school work experience and a clean recent driving record (a DUI in the past five years eliminates). The written exam covers NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 content even though certification is not required, and Lower Mainland residency is required at hire.

Entry-level hiring with no fire certifications required. The department trains recruits in-house. Medical certifications and driver licensing are the differentiators.
