How to become a firefighter in Timmins

These seven stages are the department's volunteer firefighter recruitment process. Career staff are hired as needed and posted separately under current postings, with no stages published for that route.

Applications are accepted once a year to line up with the training schedule, typically in September. Watch the department's recruitment page and the city's careers page in late summer rather than waiting to be told.

Read the whole recruitment package before you start. It says applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements will not be considered, so check the age, education, licence, vision and criminal record conditions against your own situation first.

Application packages go to the Human Resources department. The package says incomplete or inaccurate application forms will not be accepted, so work through every field rather than leaving blanks.

Two documents catch people out: the driver's abstract must be provided with the application, and so must a criminal record check. Both take time to obtain, so request them as soon as the posting appears.

Applicants who are successful at this stage are contacted by phone or email with further testing and interview dates.

There is an inconsistency inside the department's own package worth knowing about. The interview is printed as Stage 3, but its text says candidates who are successful in the job-related physical fitness test will be considered for an interview, which would place it after Stage 5. Because the interview is about suitability rather than fire knowledge, prepare honest answers about your availability, your response times, and how you handle a highly structured environment with strict rules and procedures.

Bring short, true examples of working in a team and staying calm when something went wrong.

The package states the medical assessment and eye examination are done at the municipality's expense, so do not expect to be billed for this step.

The physical test requirements are included in the recruitment package itself, so read that section and train against the listed tasks rather than guessing. Expect climbing, carrying, lifting and dragging.

You must sign the Job-Related Physical Fitness Test Requirement Release Form before testing starts. Read it in advance so you are not making a decision on the day.

Build the strength and aerobic base over months, not the final two weeks. The package describes the tests as gauging physical and mental fitness together with basic knowledge, so treat both halves seriously.

This stage applies to candidates going to stations that provide water and ice rescue. If you are unsure whether your station does, ask when you are contacted about test dates.

If you are not a confident swimmer, start pool time well before recruitment opens. Comfort in the water takes longer to build than most people expect, and it cannot be crammed.

Selection is based on the whole process, not one strong stage, so a weak result anywhere can decide it. The package is clear that at the conclusion of each stage it is decided which candidates move on.

Understand the commitment before you accept. For the first four years the package describes an aggressive training schedule with a minimum of 136 hours of training a year, on top of calls and community events.
