How to become a firefighter in Swift Current

Swift Current takes applications by resume only, so there is no separate city application form to complete. Human Resources runs recruiting for the fire department, and postings follow the collective agreement and the city's hiring policy for permanent positions.

Two documents must arrive with the resume: a criminal record check including vulnerable sector screening, and a driver's abstract. Order both early, because the page states they must accompany the resume.

Write the resume against the published minimums: Grade 12 or GED, Firefighter Level 2 (NFPA 1001), valid CPR at the BLS-C level, a valid Primary Care Paramedic qualification with the ability to become licensed under the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics, and a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan licence or equivalent. All fire courses must be IFSAC or Pro Board certified. Additional credit is listed for NFPA 1002 driver operator (pump and aerial), ICS 100 through 400, NFPA 1041 instructor, NFPA 1035 public educator, NFPA 1031 inspector, NFPA 1033 investigator, hazardous materials technician, CPR instructor, and a Class 3 licence with air endorsement, so list every one you hold.

Screening is done by the fire officers themselves rather than by an outside testing agency. Your resume is read by people who know exactly what each certificate means, so name certifications precisely, with the issuing body and the level.

Only shortlisted applicants are interviewed, so put your strongest evidence where it will be read early: certification, paramedic standing, and related experience.

The named test is the Department of National Defence Firefighter Physical Fitness Test. The page does not say when it is scheduled relative to the interview, so ask for the date and format when the department contacts you.

Train for job-shaped work rather than gym numbers: loaded carries, weighted stair climbs, hose and equipment handling, and grip endurance. Your result is not pass or fail alone, because it feeds directly into how you are ranked.

The panel is small and senior. Expect the fire officers to test practical judgment and the Human Resources representative to focus on conduct, reliability, and fit with the crew.

Swift Current hires career firefighters who are also paramedics, so be ready to speak to both sides of the role. Prepare short, true examples of teamwork, decision-making under pressure, and working to a standard.

No single stage decides the outcome. Because the ranking combines interview, resume and physical test results, a strong resume will not carry a weak interview and a strong interview will not carry a weak test.

The offer comes in writing from the Fire Chief and depends on your references and tests coming back clean. The city asks for a written acceptance letter in return, so reply in writing and keep a copy of both documents.

This one happens after you are hired rather than before. The department books it with its own physician and it must be completed within 60 days of hire.
