The package's hiring schedule also lists an open house and a public information night at the fire station that are worth attending before you apply.
Confirm you meet the published requirements first: at least 18 years old, a minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent, a valid Manitoba Class 5F licence with no restrictions that would prevent a Class 4F licence with air brake endorsement, and being mentally and physically able to do the job. Applications are accepted in person at Steinbach City Hall, 225 Reimer Avenue, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, by mail to the same address, or by email to firechief@steinbach.ca.

Steinbach publishes the full nine-station course in Appendix C of the recruitment package and states it tests for fear of heights, claustrophobia, basic strength, and stamina. The course opens with a 95-foot aerial ladder climb and descent, a power saw carry of 100 feet each way with a second saw on the return, a 100-foot drag of a charged 1 3/4 inch hoseline, and ladder climbs with a window dismount and a roof dismount.
The remaining stations are five trips up and down two and a half storeys of stairs in full turnout gear and breathing apparatus, a hand-over-hand hoist of a rolled 5-inch hose from the top of the tower, a 160-pound manikin drag around five pylons and back, a controlled removal and replacement of a ground ladder from a truck, and a hoseline follow through a confined space with your mask blacked out. The package warns that the order and content of each station may not be exactly as described, so train the movements rather than a memorized sequence.
The physical test runs on a separate day from the interview; in 2026 both fell on the July 18 and 19 weekend. In the weeks before, build weighted stair climbs, loaded carries, sled or tire drags, and grip endurance, and practise simple tasks with your vision blocked so the blacked-out station feels familiar rather than alarming.

Expect availability to matter. The department runs three squads, each on call for one full week out of every three with no pay for on-call hours, and members who cannot respond during their week are expected to find their own coverage, so be ready to explain how your job and home life fit that rotation.

Hired candidates attend an orientation class covering city and department policies, a tour of the facilities, paperwork, an overview of the training schedule, and distribution of textbooks and training material. In 2026 orientation was set for August 25, with the first fire drill on September 1 and the first Firefighter I class on September 8.
Plan the commitment before you accept a spot. Recruits train every Tuesday evening for a four-hour session plus a full eight-hour day roughly one Saturday per month, and some courses, such as the 20-hour emergency vehicle driving course, run a Friday evening plus full days Saturday and Sunday.
The program takes 12 to 18 months and completes NFPA 1001 Firefighter I, including NFPA 1072 HazMat Operations, with testing through the Manitoba Emergency Services College and a first aid course at the department's expense. You are evaluated throughout, and the package states plainly that recruits who cannot meet the training objectives may be released from the program.
Passing Firefighter I can lead to hire as a probationary firefighter, a one-year probationary period, and then Firefighter I status.
