How to become a firefighter in Port Coquitlam

Combine every supporting document into one file, laid out in the order the guide gives: EMA licence letter or card, front and back of your BC driver's licence, a five-year driver's abstract, NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II certification, then all other course and education certifications.

Answer every question on the online application. The department states that your answers to the online questions and your resume content determine whether you are invited to the second stage, and that incomplete applications are not considered.

Apply once and apply early. No preference is given to early applicants, but leaving it to the closing day gives you no room if the portal misbehaves, and applications submitted after the closing date are not accepted. Check the residency rule first: firefighters must live within 30 kilometres of the city boundaries.

The guide describes this as informal but focused. The panel wants to understand who you are and why you want to join, and may ask a few situational or behavioural questions along the way.

Bring any new or updated documentation and certifications with you. Have a clear, honest answer for why Port Coquitlam specifically rather than a general answer about wanting to be a firefighter.

You wear a 50-pound weighted vest at every station except the aerial ladder climb, plus long pants, a hard hat with chin strap, work gloves, and footwear with no open heel or toe. Shorts are not permitted. Gloves, hard hat, and vest are supplied.

There is a three-minute walk or rest between events and running between stations is not allowed. You get one warning and are disqualified on a second infraction, and one foot must stay in contact with the ground at all times. Pace yourself deliberately.

Two stations catch people out. The aerial ladder climb uses a 107-foot ladder and requires three points of contact going up and coming down, and the room search has you crawling roughly 75 feet in a blacked-out mask while staying in contact with a charged hose line. If heights or tight spaces trouble you, work on that well before the date rather than discovering it on the day.

Both days run 09:00 to 16:00 at Fire Station One, 1725 Broadway Street, and you must submit a completed Release of Liability Waiver before day one begins. Arrive ready to start at 09:00 sharp.

Wear work-appropriate clothing suitable for intense physical activity. Shorts are not permitted and steel-toed boots are required. Bring a water bottle, a change of clothes, and a towel. A lunch break is provided but lunch is not supplied, and you may leave the site during it.

You are assessed on your individual skills and progress and on your ability to collaborate as part of a team. The guide says a respectful and cooperative attitude toward teammates is essential at all times, so competing against the people beside you works against you.

Answer clearly and concisely. The panel rates you on the responses you provide, so a focused answer beats a long one that never lands.

Prepare examples that show judgment, teamwork, and how you handle pressure, and be ready to describe what you did and what resulted. The interview is also your chance to display your best attributes, so do not wait to be asked.

You are only asked for this once you are being considered for the In-Station Assessment Days, so being asked is a good sign rather than a routine formality.

A criminal record does not automatically exclude you from employment with the City of Port Coquitlam. The city reviews the record in confidence and considers the nature of the offence, when it occurred, and its relevance to the position. Failing to fully inform the city is what removes people from the process, so disclose openly.

You may take part in equipment checks, station maintenance, training events, and company inspections, and respond with crews to incidents as an observer. It is a working day, not a tour.

You are with two different crews across the two days, so you make first impressions twice. Be useful, ask sensible questions, and let the crew work.

During an open recruitment the department does not grant candidates hall tours or access to fire department personnel, and all questions go to city Human Resources instead. These days are your only inside look at the service, so use them well.

Placement in the pool is not employment. The department contacts a candidate from the pool when and if a vacancy occurs or a position becomes available, and it reserves the right to end the pool and start a new competition at any time.

Keep your licences, certifications, and medical currency valid while you wait, and make sure Human Resources always has your current contact details.

References are asked to rate you based on their experiences with you as an employee, co-worker, or otherwise, and to assess your present or past employment and your suitability for the job. Choose people who have genuinely seen you work.

Give each person notice and a short reminder of what you worked on together, so their answers are specific rather than generic.

The offer is conditional. Personal reference checks and medical evaluation results determine whether you move on to the next stage, so nothing is settled yet.

Read the terms before you accept and ask Human Resources about anything you do not understand, including the residential requirement to live within 30 kilometres of the city boundaries as set out in the Local 1941 IAFF collective agreement.

Employment is conditional on meeting all NFPA 1582 medical examination standards. The published vision and hearing criteria are colour and peripheral vision safe for the position, 20/30 corrected binocular and 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision or better, and normal hearing without artificial aids.

If anything in your health history could be relevant, raise it with your own doctor before the appointment so you understand where you stand rather than learning it at the examination.

This is the final stage, and the Fire Chief may select from the candidates identified in the eligibility pool stage whenever firefighter vacancies become available. The timing depends on vacancies rather than on anything you do.
