How to become a firefighter in Medicine Hat
The requirements below were researched against the official sources linked at the bottom of this page and are pending final verification. Always confirm against the current official posting.
Medicine Hat hires pre-certified firefighters: NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 and NFPA 472/1072 HazMat Awareness and Operations certificates with IFSAC or ProBoard seals are required, alongside a grade 12 diploma or equivalency, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C/AED as a minimum, and a valid Alberta Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement supported by a current abstract with six or fewer demerits. The fitness assessment is completed at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation at the candidate's cost, and the process runs through aptitude testing, a job skill assessment, interviews, psychometric testing, and a one-day station ride-along before an eligibility list is created.
NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II plus HazMat Operations are required before applying. Budget for fire school before you can compete.
