The only recruitment currently advertised on the LFES page is for paramedics, not firefighters: "Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is recruiting for up to two (2) Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) and five (5) Primary Care Paramedics (PCP)... Apply by August 19, 2026." Lethbridge runs an integrated fire and EMS service, so that posting is a real route in for a paramedic, but it is not the firefighter competition. Lethbridge hires on a paramedic-first model. Recruits are hired as Paramedic Firefighters into the Dedicated EMS Division, with the opportunity to transition to the Integrated Fire-EMS Division after completing a fire academy. Applicants must be registered as an Advanced Care Paramedic or Primary Care Paramedic, with preference given to ACPs. A minimum Alberta Class 4 licence is required by the start date, and a Class 3 with Q (air brake) endorsement must be obtained before starting fire academy. The hiring process

Your whole application goes in as one single PDF through the City of Lethbridge careers site at Lethbridge.ca/careers, with the mandatory Candidate Application Cover Page attached as the first page. The package must include that cover page, a cover letter, a resume, proof of Alberta College of Paramedics registration, a driver's abstract and a Police Information Check with vulnerable sector search both dated within 3 months of the posting close, and proof of a successful F.A.R.E. test within 6 months of the close.
The cover page asks direct questions: whether you currently work for an ALS service and for how long, whether you have passed the Lifemark F.A.R.E., whether you hold NFPA 1001 with an IFSAC or ProBoard seal (attach the certificate if yes), and where you stand in an ACP program, down to your remaining practicums, preceptor, and expected exam date. Answer every line, because a blank field reads as a no.
If a document is held up, do not sit on your application. LFES says to submit with what you have before the posting closes, email firedepartment@lethbridge.ca to flag the outstanding item, and send it promptly once it arrives.
Preference goes to Advanced Care Paramedics, and hires start in the Dedicated EMS Division with fire academy coming later based on vacancies. LFES also offers ride-alongs to registered EMR, PCP, or ACP holders with a criminal record check, which is a strong way to learn the service before you write a cover letter about it.

LFES does not publish the format, provider, or content of this exam, so confirm the details with the department when you are invited to testing. Fire aptitude exams in Canada commonly cover reading comprehension, basic math without a calculator, mechanical reasoning, spatial ability, and following written procedures, so those are sensible areas to prepare.
Practise under timed conditions. Most candidates lose marks to the clock, not the content, so learn to answer what you know quickly, flag what you do not, and come back at the end.
Refresh mechanical basics such as levers, pulleys, gears, valves, and water pressure. As a paramedic applicant you may not have touched this material since high school, and it is the section fire-side candidates most often outscore EMS-side candidates on.

LFES does not publish the exam content, so prepare at the level of your Alberta College of Paramedics registration, PCP or ACP, and review the current competencies and treatment standards for your designation. If you are unsure what protocols the exam draws from, confirm with the department.
For the scenario portion, practise running calls out loud from start to finish: scene safety, primary survey, working impression, treatment, transport decision, and handover. Assessors can only mark what you say and do, not what you silently know.
The department publishes what its recruits train on, including high-performance CPR, Zoll monitors and the AutoPulse, the Handtevy pediatric system, and video laryngoscopy. That list signals the clinical environment you are being hired into, so being fluent in current resuscitation practice is time well spent.

This is a structured behavioural interview, so expect questions that start with tell me about a time. Prepare six to eight true stories from real calls and jobs, each with the situation, what you did, and the result, covering patient care under pressure, conflict with a partner or a patient, a mistake you owned, and teamwork.
LFES describes its mission as protecting and preserving the community with integrity, courage and compassion, and it hires paramedics first into a dedicated EMS division. Show that you want the paramedic career they are actually offering, not just a fast lane to a fire truck.
Strong candidates know the service. Understand the two career streams, Dedicated EMS and Integrated Fire-EMS, and be ready to say why Lethbridge specifically, with something a generic answer could not contain.

The assessor will often revisit your written psychological exam responses. Consistency matters more than polish, so answer the same way you did on paper and expand honestly where asked.
Expect plain questions about stress, sleep, coping habits, support systems, and exposure to trauma in emergency work. Speaking frankly about how you manage the hard parts of the job reads as insight, not weakness.
