The hiring process

Iqaluit recruits episodically to refill a Firefighter Eligibility Pool, so start by watching iqaluit.ca/careers for a Firefighter/EMR posting. No posting was open when the careers page was last checked, and applications received outside the posted timeline are not accepted.
Before applying, confirm you meet every minimum: NFPA 1001 Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Responder certification or better, Grade 12 or equivalent, Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status, and a valid Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement. The 2023 candidate guide also required a driver's abstract showing no more than six points counted since January 1, 2018.
Submit everything as PDF: a cover letter, resume, copies of all qualifications, your driver's abstract, and the signed Iqaluit Fire Department Recruit Firefighter Self-Evaluation Questionnaire from the candidate guide. Reference checks are completed before candidates are selected for the Firefighter Eligibility Pool. The guide asks for two contacts you have worked for recently and reported to in some manner, so choose supervisors rather than friends or peers.
Ask your references first and tell them what the role involves. A supervisor who can speak to your reliability, teamwork, and conduct under pressure is worth more than a senior title who barely knows your work.
Make sure their phone numbers and email addresses are current. A reference who cannot be reached can stall your file.

After the interview stage, candidates are told whether they have been selected for the Firefighter Eligibility Pool. Selection does not guarantee an offer; the department hires on attrition and contacts pool members when and if a vacancy opens.
The guide does not publish how long the pool remains valid, so confirm that with the department. Keep your contact details current with the City so an offer can reach you.
Use the wait to keep improving. Before any offer you must verify you still hold every minimum qualification, and the final Fire Chief interview asks how you have continued personal and professional development since joining the pool.

A conditional offer requires an updated Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening and a Pre-Placement Medical Assessment before you start work. The City may also re-verify your licences and certifications at this stage, so keep everything valid.
The guide lists an interview with the Fire Chief as the final selection stage. Come prepared to show how you have kept developing since your selection to the eligibility pool, because you must pass this interview to move forward.
Successful hires serve a probationary period of six consecutive calendar months under the collective agreement and may be required to live within Iqaluit. If you are relocating, ask the department about housing and start-date logistics when the offer is made.
