4. 4Fitness and job-specific testingTwo days: swim test, ladder climb, treadmill, hose work, victim rescue simulation, and forcible entry.

   This stage runs over two days and is based on the University of Alberta firefighter assessment guidelines. Day one is a swim test and an acrophobia test on a ladder climb; day two is a treadmill test, charged hose advance, high-volume hose pull, forcible entry simulation, victim rescue, and ladder climb.

   The swim and ladder events screen for water comfort and fear of heights, and gym strength does not substitute for either. If you are not a confident swimmer, fix that before the posting reopens.

   Build an aerobic base for the treadmill, then train grip, pulling, and striking strength for the hose and forcible entry events. Farmer carries, sled drags, and sledgehammer work map well onto this event list.

   The department does not publish pass standards, equipment weights, or whether events are done in gear, so confirm those details in your test invitation. Arrive rested and fuelled, because two consecutive testing days punish poor recovery.

8. 8Conditional job offerContingent on a criminal record check, medical assessment with the department Medical Director, and psychological evaluation.

   The offer is verbal and conditional on three things: a criminal record check including a vulnerable sector check, a medical assessment with the department's Medical Director, and a psychological assessment.

   Start your record check paperwork as soon as you are asked, and disclose anything on your record honestly, because discovery after the fact is worse than disclosure. The department's material says applicants must be of good character and reputation.
