   Wood Buffalo does not accept unsolicited applications, and there is nothing to submit between competitions. Watch the municipality's online job board and apply only when a Firefighter Paramedic posting is live.

   Have every minimum qualification in place before you apply: a high school diploma or GED, NFPA 1001 Level I and II certified through Pro Board or IFSAC, registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics as a PCP or ACP, valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) certification, and a valid Alberta Class 4 licence with Q endorsement. A Class 3 licence with Q endorsement is preferred, and a criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is also on the list.

   Human Resources and Regional Emergency Services review applications together, so make your file easy to verify. Scan your certificates and your ACP practice permit before the posting opens, and describe your qualifications using the same wording as the posting.

2. 2Aptitude testTimed multiple-choice test of reading, reasoning, mechanical aptitude, and spatial orientation. Only candidates who meet the minimum competency score continue. Invigilated exam costs, including any invigilator fee, are the candidate's responsibility.

   This is a timed multiple-choice exam covering reading comprehension and vocabulary, logical reasoning, mechanical aptitude, and spatial orientation. Only candidates who meet the minimum competency score move on to the physical fitness test.

   The department notifies candidates of their results within one hour of testing. If you live outside Fort McMurray you can write the exam online with an invigilator, but you arrange the invigilation yourself and any fees are your responsibility.

   Train under time pressure, not just for accuracy. Mechanical aptitude and spatial orientation are the sections most first-time applicants neglect, so practise full-length timed sets in those areas rather than only reading and reasoning.

3. 3Physical fitness test

   The department requires the University of Alberta firefighter physical fitness test completed within the last six months, performed in firefighting protective equipment weighing about 22 kg: balaclava, gloves, pants, jacket, and SCBA, with your own running shoes. You book directly with the University of Alberta, and if no appointment is available the department can arrange testing through the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray.

   The day runs about three hours. It starts with a treadmill VO2 max test, a 5-minute warm-up then 8 minutes at a 10 percent grade with the grade and speed rising each minute, followed by a 60-minute rest, a 30-minute orientation, and the job task stations with 3 minutes of recovery between each.

   The station standards are published: a hose advance in 36 seconds without running, three high-volume hose pulls in under 90 seconds, a forcible entry sled moved three feet within 24 seconds, a 68 kg victim drag in under 49 seconds, 150 rungs on a Jacobs Ladder within 109 seconds, and an equipment carry with tool holds within 270 seconds. A Medical Clearance Form signed by a physician is mandatory before you can test, so book that appointment as soon as you register.

   The University of Alberta lists the test at $399 plus GST payable at booking with a non-refundable $150 portion, while the department's testing document lists $375 plus GST, so confirm the current fee when you book. Bring photo ID, the signed medical form, shorts, two t-shirts, running shoes, extra socks, and a water bottle, and avoid strenuous exercise for several days beforehand.

4. 4Interview

   The interview evaluates technical skills, communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills, and overall suitability. This is a fully integrated fire and EMS service, so expect questions that draw on both your fire training and your paramedic practice.

   Bring the full document package the department lists: an updated resume, your high school diploma or GED, fire and medical certificates including NFPA 1001 Level I and II proof, your Alberta College of Paramedics practice permit, valid CPR certification, your Alberta Class 4 licence with Q endorsement, a commercial 5-year driver's abstract, a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector check, and three work-related supervisory references.

   Prepare short, specific examples from real calls or work situations that show judgment, communication, and teamwork, and practise telling each one out loud in under two minutes. Answer the question that was asked, then stop.

5. 5Background check

   The department reviews and evaluates your personal, work, and criminal history. Your three references must be work-related and supervisory, at least one from your current or most recent employer; recent graduates may submit instructors instead.

   Tell your references to expect contact and remind them what you did under their supervision. A reference who sounds vague or surprised weakens your file even when they think well of you.

   Be consistent and honest across your application, interview, and this check. If something in your history needs context, raise it yourself, because an unexplained surprise hurts far more than a disclosed one.

6. 6Medical assessments

   An independent third-party provider runs the medical and a licensed physician reviews the results. It includes a head-to-toe physical exam with health history, a comprehensive vision test, an audiometric test, spirometry, bloodwork, an ECG, a chest X-ray, and a stress test.

   You will complete a Medical Release Form, an Employee Health Questionnaire, an Audiogram Questionnaire, and a Spirometry Questionnaire. The immunization requirements are specific: a dTap series with a booster every 10 years, a two-dose MMR series, hepatitis A and B series, varicella titres, a Mantoux test within the last 12 months, and an annual influenza vaccine.

   Start gathering your immunization records now, because locating childhood records or finishing a hepatitis B series can take weeks to months. If any series is incomplete, see your doctor or public health early so this stage does not stall your file.
