The test is performed in firefighting protective equipment weighing about 22 kg: balaclava, gloves, pants, jacket, and SCBA, with your own running shoes. You book directly with the University of Alberta, and if no appointment is available the department can arrange testing through the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray.
The day runs about three hours. It starts with a treadmill VO2 max test, a 5-minute warm-up then 8 minutes at a 10 percent grade with the grade and speed rising each minute, followed by a 60-minute rest, a 30-minute orientation, and the job task stations with 3 minutes of recovery between each.

An independent third-party provider runs the medical and a licensed physician reviews the results. It includes a head-to-toe physical exam with health history, a comprehensive vision test, an audiometric test, spirometry, bloodwork, an ECG, a chest X-ray, and a stress test.
You will complete a Medical Release Form, an Employee Health Questionnaire, an Audiogram Questionnaire, and a Spirometry Questionnaire. Regional Emergency Services is a fully integrated fire and EMS service, including advanced life support and helicopter life flight.
Unsolicited applications are not accepted; candidates apply online when positions are posted.
The department also hires Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedics, who need current Alberta College of Paramedics ACP certification but no previous fire training. Those hired have the opportunity to obtain fire training if they choose to become qualified Firefighter ACPs.
The Paramedic - Firefighter Cadet Program hires paramedics registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as a PCP or ACP, and is also open to candidates able to complete that registration by a deadline the posting sets. Cadets complete a 17-week training program at no cost while employed full time, covering NFPA 1001 Level I and II, NFPA 470 Dangerous Goods Awareness and Operations, NFPA 1002 Driver Operator, 1140 Wildland Firefighter, HP-CPR, ITLS, NVCI and ICS.
Cadets need a valid Class 4 Alberta licence at hire and must obtain the Q endorsement at their own expense before the program ends, pass firefighter physical fitness testing within 6 months of the start date, and enter into a Return of Service Agreement to remain employed for three years after completing the program.
