How to become a firefighter in Edmonton

Verified 2026-07
Model A: We train you
CPS
U of A

Edmonton runs a single annual application window every January and trains recruits in a paid 4-month academy, so no fire certifications are required to apply. The one credential you must hold at application is a valid 80-hour Advanced First Aid certificate approved by Alberta OHS. The process runs about 8 months and includes an MMI interview, a mandatory ride-along, and the University of Alberta fitness test, followed by a Threshold Knowledge Test on IFSTA Essentials before recruit class.

Entry-level hiring with no fire certifications required. The department trains recruits in-house. Medical certifications and driver licensing are the differentiators.
