The one credential you must hold at application is a valid 80-hour Advanced First Aid certificate approved by Alberta OHS. The hiring process

Edmonton accepts applications through the City of Edmonton careers site between January 1 and 31 each year, for recruit classes employed the following year. The department says it is updating its process for the 2027 intake, so check the recruitment page for finalized dates and guidelines before you plan around January.
At application you need a high school diploma or equivalent (international schooling needs an Educational Credential Assessment) and at least one valid medical certificate from Edmonton's accepted list. That list includes the 80-hour Advanced First Aid (Alberta OHS approved), Medical First Responder, EMR, PCP, ACP, nursing registrations, physician assistant certification, and Canadian Armed Forces Combat First Aid for current members.
The resume review is worth 10 percent of your overall score. Answer every pre-screen question exactly as asked, and upload supporting evidence for each credential you claim, because tangible assets require proof.
Honesty matters from the first form: Edmonton states that withheld, falsified, or misrepresented information removes you from consideration and can rescind an offer or end employment later. The Alberta Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement is required at hire, not at application, so do not wait on it to apply.

The aptitude test is worth 40 percent of your overall score, the largest single written component, and no rewrites are permitted. It typically runs in March or April, in a virtual format, by invitation only, with a non-refundable $65 fee.
Edmonton says the test assesses oral comprehension, written understanding, numerical skills, maps, diagrams and mechanical reasoning, teamwork, and public speaking. Optional study materials are sold alongside it, a $5 manual and $15 practice tests, and they are the most direct preview of the format you can get.
If you need a testing accommodation, the request and current supporting documentation are due by February 28, so start that paperwork as soon as you apply.
Because there is no rewrite, prepare before the invitation arrives. Short daily timed practice with reading passages, arithmetic without a calculator, and mechanical reasoning questions builds more score than one long cram the week of the test.

Edmonton runs Multiple Mini Interviews in the spring for invited candidates, and the MMI is worth 50 percent of your overall score, the single biggest factor in your ranking. There are seven stations with one question each, two minutes to prepare and five minutes to respond per station.
The structured format scores every candidate the same way, which rewards organized answers over charm. Use your two minutes to jot a quick outline, answer the question actually asked, and land a clear ending inside the five minutes.
Each station is a fresh start with a new question, so a weak answer at one station does not follow you to the next. Reset and treat every door as a clean slate.
Practise out loud against a timer with scenario and behavioural questions until five minutes feels like enough time rather than too much. Recording yourself and cutting filler is the fastest single improvement most first-time candidates can make.

Edmonton requires all candidates to participate in a ride-along, a job-shadow experience observing a fire crew during a shift. It is your clearest look at the real job before you commit, and the crew's clearest look at you.
Treat it like a working interview even though the City does not publish a scoring rubric for it. Arrive early, dress neatly, follow every safety instruction, and stay out of the way when calls come in.
Ask the crew genuine questions about shift life, training, and what surprised them about the job. Candidates who listen more than they talk tend to leave the best impression.

The fitness test is pass or fail and is run by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation. It is a treadmill test followed by six job-simulation stations, with a non-refundable $388.50 fee paid to the university.
The City points candidates to uab.ca/firetest for details. We could not verify that page directly, so confirm current protocols, booking, dates, and what to bring with the University of Alberta before you pay.
Train for both halves: a strong aerobic base for the treadmill, plus loaded carries, stair work under load, sled pushes or drags, and grip endurance for the job-simulation circuit. Arriving fit enough to pass comfortably, not barely, protects you against a bad day.
Because the fee is non-refundable, book the test only when your training results say you are ready.

Edmonton states candidates may be required to undergo a psychological assessment used to identify the personality traits of successful firefighters. Not everyone is asked, so an invitation is a normal step, not a red flag.
There is nothing to study. Answer honestly and consistently, because these instruments are designed to notice a performed profile, and your other stages already tell the department who you are.
Sleep properly the night before and work at a steady pace. Take unclear questions at face value instead of hunting for the answer you think the department wants.

Edmonton's current page shows the medical assessment happening when a recruit class is formed, grouped with the police information check (including vulnerable sector), reference checks, proof of your Alberta Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement, orientation, and mask fitting. Our record lists the medical as an NFPA 1582 assessment that includes immunization records, but the current page does not name the standard, so confirm the details with the department.
Get ahead of the paperwork now: pull together your immunization history, and request records early if they are scattered across providers or provinces, because retrieving them can take weeks.
If you wear corrective lenses or manage an ongoing medical condition, bring current documentation from your physician so the examiner has the full picture. Do not guess at what disqualifies you; ask the recruitment team through firefighterrecruitment@edmonton.ca.

Your overall score combines the resume review at 10 percent, the aptitude test at 40 percent, and the MMI at 50 percent, and you must have passed the fitness test. Edmonton says only applicants with the highest overall scores are placed on the eligibility list.
The list stays valid until December 31 of the following year, and that date can be extended at the discretion of the Fire Chief. A spot on the list is not a job offer: recruit classes are formed when the department determines it needs one.

Before a recruit class is formed, Edmonton requires a written examination based on the Essentials of Fire Fighting textbook for NFPA 1001 Level 1, and the study materials are provided up to six weeks before the exam. The department also holds two information sessions before the assessment, and EFRS fitness instructors host a team workout.
Six weeks is enough time if you treat it like a course. Split the provided material into a weekly reading plan, and finish your first full pass early enough to leave the last two weeks for review and self-testing.
Test yourself actively rather than rereading: close the book and write out what a chapter covered, or have someone quiz you from the chapter review questions.
Attend both information sessions and the team workout. They tell you exactly what the department expects on exam day, and the workout is a preview of academy training culture.
