   The required qualifications file must contain, in this order: proof of legal entitlement to work in Canada, your NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 certificate with Pro Board or IFSAC accreditation, your high school transcript (not the diploma), both sides of your driver's licence, a driver's abstract dated within 15 days of submission showing a status of NORMAL, and your BC EMR licence if you already hold one. More than six points on the abstract may eliminate your application, and other aspects of your driving record are also considered.

   You can apply without the Class 3 licence with air brake or the BC EMR licence, but you must prove both by Stage 3 or be removed from the process. Intentionally misrepresenting yourself at any stage closes your file permanently and bars you from all future Delta competitions.

   This is a structured interview with several question types, including behavioural style questions about you, your work and life experience, and your abilities. Invitations for this stage come by telephone.

   Bring all original documentation and certifications. This is also a hard deadline: proof of a valid BC Class 3 licence with air brake endorsement (or higher, such as Class 1) and a valid BC EMR licence is required by Stage 3, or you are removed from the process.

   Langara publishes the format: a progressive treadmill test of aerobic capacity, plus six job-related stations performed in about 23 kg of firefighting gear, including an equipment carry, a charged hose advance, a weighted sled pull, forcible entry, a victim drag, and a repeated ladder climb, each with a time limit. Langara states results are valid for one year from the test date.

   Langara requires medical clearance from a physician before testing, and says to avoid alcohol and cannabis products the day before and not to smoke or vape for at least two hours beforehand.

   Train the way the test works: steady uphill treadmill or stair work for the aerobic portion, plus loaded carries, sled pulls, drags, and grip endurance for the stations. Practising in a weighted vest helps your body adapt to working under load.

5. 5Skills refresher dayFive stations: hydrant catching and hose advance, 24-foot ladder carry and raise, SCBA donning and doffing, portable equipment, and aerial ladder climb.

   This session runs at Fire Hall #4 in Delta and is taught by Delta Fire and Emergency Services instructors. It exists so you can receive specific instruction and practise your skills before the ride-along stage.

   There are five stations: hydrant catching and hose advance with pre-connects, a 24-foot ladder carry and raise, SCBA donning and doffing using both the over the coat and over the head methods, portable equipment (chainsaw, K12, PPV fan, and Jaws motor and tools), and an aerial ladder climb.

   Treat it as a coached session where how you learn matters. Listen closely, follow instructions exactly as given, and show you can take correction, because the same five stations come back at the skills review day after your ride-alongs.

6. 6Ride-alongsThree day-shift ride-alongs at separate Delta fire halls.

   You attend three separate Delta fire halls on the day shift schedule, participating as part of the crew, responding to calls, and taking part in daily activities. You report directly to the Captain and work under the supervision of the Officer in Charge, who decides how involved you can be.

   The October 2025 guide states candidates are evaluated on attendance, interpersonal and communication skills, motivation, performance, and personal suitability. Every hour at the hall is part of the assessment.

   Arrive early, dress appropriately, and pitch in with hall duties without being asked twice. Stay engaged between calls and ask thoughtful questions; how you fit into a crew is exactly what this stage measures.

   Delta does not offer hall visits or ride-alongs outside the recruitment process, so this is your only chance to show it. Confirm reporting details with the department if anything in your invitation is unclear.

7. 7Skills review dayThe same five stations, reviewed after the ride-alongs.

   The same five stations from the refresher day are run again at Fire Hall #4, this time as a review of your abilities after the ride-along stage. Invitations come by email.

   Between the refresher day and this session, rehearse each station and the exact sequences the instructors taught. The department is reviewing what you retained, so perform each skill the way Delta instructors showed you, even if you learned a different method elsewhere.

   Keep your fitness up through this stretch of the process. The stations involve real hose, ladder, and SCBA work, and showing up fresh and practised is within your control.

8. 8Medical and physical examinationNFPA 1582 examination by an independent medical provider. Candidates pay 50% of the fee.

   You must attend and pass a comprehensive examination by an independent medical provider showing you are medically and physically fit to the NFPA 1582 standard. You pay 50% of the exam fee; Delta does not publish the dollar amount, so confirm the cost with the department when scheduled.

   Delta publishes the vision and hearing criteria: colour and peripheral vision safe for the position, 20/30 corrected and 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision or better, and normal hearing without artificial aids.

   If you are unsure whether a condition affects you, Delta directs candidates to review NFPA 1582 Chapter 6 and consult their own family doctor or specialist. The department states it cannot answer specific medical questions.

   Delta may contact your present or past employers for work-related and character references, which you authorize in the application declaration. A conviction for a criminal offence related to the job of a firefighter is a disqualifier under the required qualifications.

   Give your references advance notice so they respond quickly, and choose people who can speak to the qualities Delta screens for throughout the process, such as integrity, teamwork, and reliability.

10. 10Fire Chief's interview

    Selected candidates are invited to an interview with the Fire Chief, with notification by telephone. Delta publishes little else about this stage, so treat any instructions in the call as the authoritative source of what to bring.

    By this point the department is making a final judgement on fit. Be ready to explain clearly why Delta, what you learned during the ride-alongs and skills days, and what kind of crew member you intend to be.

    Keep your answers honest and consistent with everything you have shown earlier in the process. This is general interview craft rather than published Delta guidance.

11. 11Offers of employment and eligibility listAn eligibility list of qualified candidates may be kept for vacancies in the upcoming year.

    Candidates who succeed through the process may receive offers of employment, and Delta may create an eligibility list of qualified candidates for vacancies that arise in the upcoming year. If you are listed rather than hired immediately, you may still be considered as vacancies open.

    Plan for the published conditions of employment: a one-year probationary period, and living restrictions requiring members to live within boundaries roughly matching Metro Vancouver, east to Chilliwack and north to Squamish, excluding Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast. Up to 15% of members may live outside these boundaries.

    Keep your contact information current with the department while you are on the list, since Delta contacts candidates by email and telephone and issues deadlines. If your circumstances change, tell them rather than letting a call go unanswered.
