How to become a firefighter in Delta

Delta hires pre-certified: NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 with a Pro Board or IFSAC seal and NFPA 472 HazMat Operations are required qualifications, and community volunteer experience is also on the required list. A Class 3 licence with air brake and an EMR licence can be obtained after applying but must be proven before the interview stage. The eleven-stage process includes a free written aptitude test, the Langara College fitness test with the candidate paying half the $400 fee, a skills refresher day, three ride-alongs, and a skills review day before the medical, checks, and Fire Chief interview.
NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II plus HazMat Operations are required before applying. Budget for fire school before you can compete.

Required at application
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
Shown by a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, current permanent resident card, or current landed immigrant card.
Prepare with roadmap step 2 - NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 (Pro Board or IFSAC)
Certificate of completion from an approved accredited firefighter training program.
Prepare with roadmap step 5 - NFPA 472 HazMat Operations level
Pro Board or IFSAC accreditation is not required, but documented proof that training meets or exceeds the NFPA standard is.
Prepare with roadmap step 5 - High school graduation or equivalent
Submit a high school transcript or equivalency, not the diploma.
Prepare with roadmap step 2 - Driver's abstract (5-year history, dated within 15 days of application)
Must demonstrate safe and responsible driving. More than six points may eliminate an application. The abstract must display a status of NORMAL.

Required before hire

Applications without it are accepted, but proof is required before the start of Stage 3 (the interview stage) or you are removed from the process.

Includes colour and peripheral vision safe for the position, 20/30 corrected and 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision or better, and normal hearing without artificial aids.

Five stations: hydrant catching and hose advance, 24-foot ladder carry and raise, SCBA donning and doffing, portable equipment, and aerial ladder climb.

Three day-shift ride-alongs at separate Delta fire halls.
