The hiring process

Read the Firefighter Application Manual and the Before You Apply page before you start, and confirm you fully hold every minimum qualification: Grade 12 or GED, a valid Class 3 BC driver's licence with a safe driving record, an EMA First Responders licence or higher, and NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 certification. The city's FAQ is clear that being registered in a course or partway through it does not count, and the NFPA certification must carry an IFSAC or Pro Board seal.
Apply online through the City of Coquitlam's Career Opportunities portal during an open competition. Create a client profile, select the firefighter posting, and upload two PDF files: your resume saved as "YOUR LAST NAME_RESUME" and one combined supporting-documents file saved as "YOUR LAST NAME_SUPPORTING".
Build the supporting PDF in the city's published order: a driver's abstract issued within the last 30 days, your secondary school diploma or equivalency, any post-secondary or trades credentials, any HazMat or technical rescue certificates, your NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 certificates, then EMR, First Responder, or first aid licences. Every page should be right side up and easy to read.
Strong applicants also show the preferred qualifications: a higher medical licence such as EMR, PCP, ACP, or BC nursing registration, trades or post-secondary education, related work such as paid, auxiliary, or forestry firefighting, community volunteering, additional languages, and a demonstrated fitness lifestyle. Coquitlam does not offer ride-alongs to non-fire personnel and hires no lateral transfers, so build your file through volunteering and related work instead.

Only shortlisted applicants move to this stage. It is a psychometric assessment run by BL Associates (BLA) Corporate Psychologists Inc., and you pay the $340 plus tax fee yourself.
Plan for five to six questionnaires booked over about 3.5 hours, though most candidates finish in 2.5 to 3 hours. Timed problem-solving sections test verbal, mathematical, reasoning, and mechanical ability, while untimed character questionnaires assess suitability. BLA runs both in-person and online proctored sittings; an online sitting needs stable internet, a webcam, and a microphone.
Prepare with the practice links BLA publishes for verbal, math, reasoning, and mechanical questions, and arrive rested and fed. Scores go directly to the city, and BLA does not give candidates feedback on their results, so treat the first sitting as the one that counts.
Results stay valid for up to one year and can transfer to other participating BC departments if they meet the receiving department's threshold and sittings are at least 21 days apart. Coquitlam's pages show a transfer fee for previous BLA results of $115 in one place and $115.50 in another, so confirm the current amount with BLA's testing coordinator. If the cost is a hardship, email confidentialHR@coquitlam.ca to ask about a confidential, case-by-case subsidy.
