How to become a firefighter in City of Langley

Everything goes into a single file. Microsoft Word, PDF, JPG, or TIFF, no larger than 20 MB. ZIP, EXE, and compressed files are rejected outright, so combine before you upload rather than after.

The required documents are the Firefighter Application Form, a Class 1 or 3 Personal Driving Record or abstract obtained within six months of the closing date, current NFPA 1001 Level II certification or a combination of fire training, education and experience, a First Responder Level 3 or a valid BC EMA licence at EMR or paramedic level, and a firefighter fitness testing certificate valid within one year of the closing date. Photos of your driver's licence and a Driver Factor report are not accepted.

Read the Career Firefighter Application Manual before you start and follow it as you go. Questions the manual does not answer go to careers@langleycity.ca. You must be at least 19 on the date of application, hold Grade 12 or equivalent, and have no more than six demerit points over the past five years with no current suspensions or prohibitions.

FireTeam is a video and audio based test rather than a conventional written exam. You watch crews work through situations and answer as events unfold, so familiarity with the format matters more than knowledge.

Ergometrics publishes preparation material for applicants at ergometrics.org, and the manual points you there directly. Work through it so nothing about the format is new on test day.

Much of the test is about how you read people and behave in a crew. Answer the way a good crew member would, not the way the loudest person in the room would.

This one measures personality traits common to successful firefighters rather than knowledge. BL Associates publishes information for applicants on its own site, and the manual links it. Reading that removes most of the surprise.

Results from a BL Associates test written for another BC department may be usable. If you have written one recently, contact BL Associates to check whether your existing result can be applied here before you pay to write it again.

Selected applicants receive further information before the assessment date. Read that message closely for what to wear and bring, and confirm anything unclear rather than guessing.

The stated point of this stage is following direction and engaging effectively in a team. Listen to the whole instruction before you start moving, and help your group rather than trying to outrun it.

Answer clearly and concisely. The manual says the interviewers rate you on the responses you provide, so a focused answer scores better than a long one that circles the point.

Prepare real examples that show the behaviours the job needs, and be ready to say what the situation was, what you did, and what came of it. The interview is also described as your chance to display your best attributes, so do not wait to be asked about your strengths.

City of Langley Human Resources staff contact you about references and then speak with them about their experiences with you as an employee. Choose people who supervised you and can speak to your reliability, and give them notice.

Credentials and certificates are validated at this stage too, so anything you claimed has to hold up. You may be asked for additional references if what comes back is insufficient, so keep a second list ready.

Nothing is asked of you at this step. The manual is clear that completing and passing every earlier step still does not guarantee a job offer, so treat a quiet stretch here as normal rather than as bad news.

The department also says that if at any point you do not meet the required competencies you will be told you are not proceeding at this time, so no news is genuinely no news.

The first offer comes verbally and is conditional. Written confirmation follows only once a clear Police Information Check and medical test have been submitted.

Fitness approval is based on the NFPA 1582 standard. If you have a health question that could matter, raise it with your own doctor before the appointment rather than discovering it at one.

The process does not end at the offer. New firefighters serve a one-year probationary period with quarterly evaluations, and candidates who do not complete it successfully are released.
