The hiring process

Before you start, confirm you meet the published requirements: you live within the District of Central Saanich, you are at least 19 as of January 1, 2026, you have a high school diploma or equivalent, and you hold a valid driver's licence with access to a vehicle and a safe driving record. The current intake closes September 10, 2026, and no fire certification is needed to apply.
Build the full package early. It includes the application form, copies of your education certificates, an ICBC driver abstract, photocopies of your driver's licence front and back, a Police Information Check no older than six months, a resume, and a cover letter, plus a written request if you need any accommodation. The abstract and police check take time to obtain, so order them first.
The form asks detailed availability questions: whether you can attend Monday night practices from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., wear a pager and respond around the clock, and reach Station 1 (1512 Keating Cross Road) or Station 2 (1903 Mount Newton Cross Road) within about 10 minutes of travel. The published schedule mixes regular evening sessions with full weekend days early in the program and longer weekday blocks later on, so confirm the exact calendar with the department at orientation before committing to other plans.
Plan around the department's standing commitment as well: the application form states training is held every Monday night from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., and probationary firefighters serve a one-year probation and are expected to attend the majority of practices.
