The hiring process

Cape Breton Regional Municipality hires career firefighters through posted competitions, and there may be none open when you check. Watch the CBRM current opportunities page and apply only against a live posting, quoting its reference number. The details below come from the 2024 competition (reference 24.85-E), so confirm everything against the current posting before you apply.
The 2024 posting required every supporting document to be included with the application: proof of Grade 12 or GED, current NFPA 1001 Level I certification from an IFSAC or ProBoard accredited institution, current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certificates, and a driver's abstract showing an acceptable record. An incomplete package is the easiest way to be screened out, so gather clean copies before the closing date.
Application packages were picked up in person from the Commissionaire on the first floor of City Hall at 320 Esplanade in Sydney. Candidates outside the local area could phone 902-563-5058 or email to make alternate arrangements, and completed applications went to CBRM Human Resources by email, mail, or fax.
Level II Firefighter certification and Advanced Medical First Responder were listed as preferred qualifications, so include proof if you hold them. CBRM contacts only the candidates it selects to proceed, so no reply after the closing date usually means the competition has moved on.

The posting requires you to be medically fit for duty under NFPA 1582 and to provide a clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check as part of employment. You pay the cost of all three. CBRM does not publish the amounts, so confirm current fees with the department and your local police service.
Book the medical with a physician who knows NFPA 1582, because it is an occupational standard rather than a routine physical. Bring your health history and answer honestly, and remember the posting also makes ongoing physical fitness a condition of employment.
Request the criminal record check and vulnerable sector check through your local police as soon as CBRM asks for them, since vulnerable sector checks can take longer to come back.
