Airdrie stacks fire certification and paramedic licensing: applicants need NFPA 1001 Level I and II and NFPA 472/1072 HazMat Awareness and Operations with IFSAC or ProBoard seals, plus registration as a Primary Care or Advanced Care Paramedic with an Alberta College of Paramedics practice permit. A valid Class 1, 2, or 3 licence with Q air brake endorsement is required with fewer than 7 demerit points at application, along with a high school diploma or GED. The hiring process

Airdrie accepts applications only through the City's online system (Njoyn). Create a candidate profile under the My Profile tab, and take the City's warning literally: only resumes received through the online application system are considered.
The application includes pre-screening questions, and the City advises taking time to answer them carefully. Write a cover letter customized to this posting rather than reusing a generic one.

Candidates who pass screening write the Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) and the Comprehensive Examination Battery (CEB) online through the third-party vendor Fire and Police Selection Inc (FPSI). The published fee is $35 USD at your own cost.
FPSI offers paid preparation materials, which are optional. Airdrie does not publish a pass mark or the exact question mix, so confirm current details with the department at fire.recruitment@airdrie.ca if you need them.

This stage tests firefighting job performance requirements, including ladder evolutions and hydrant work, plus medical skills at your paramedic scope in a simulation lab.
Before the assessment, get hands back on the NFPA 1001 psychomotor skills you may not have touched since certification, especially ladder raises and hydrant work. Smooth, safe, and verbalized beats fast and sloppy.
For the clinical stations, practise full scenarios at your registration level (PCP or ACP), speaking your assessment out loud from scene safety through treatment and transport decision, because evaluators can only credit what they see and hear.

The final stage is a medical assessment to NFPA 1582 standards that includes a VO2 max treadmill assessment with a published minimum of 12 minutes 30 seconds.
Build your aerobic base over weeks, not days: steady runs plus incline treadmill intervals map directly onto the test, and arriving fit enough to pass with margin protects you on an off day.
Be complete and honest on the medical history. NFPA 1582 examiners assess conditions case by case, and an undisclosed condition found later is a bigger problem than a disclosed one; if you have a managed condition or take medication, bring documentation from your physician.
